I have had people tell me to put plastic wrap on the top of my soap to prevent ash, but that always makes my soap look crappy on top. If I pour it thick, it's hard to get the plastic wrap stuck to every spot, and I still end up with ash here and there.

Are there any "tried and true" ways of preventing ash, other than the plastic wrap trick? I have seen tons of beautiful soaps with no ash on top - there's gotta be a way???

ash

what kind of mold are you using, a log or tray? i dont let plastic touch the surface of my soap, so i make a lid from cardboard or wood that covers the mold, then i use a thicker plastic like a shower curtain liner or plastic drop cloth cut larger than the lid. i secure it firmly to the lid with double-stick tape. i fill the mold, cover with the lid with the plastic sandwiched between them, then tape the plastic to the sides in places. this should stop your ash.

Thanks!!

I use a log mold. I usually pour my soap when it's pretty thick, so I can get a nice "gloppy" design on top. When you do like you described above, you must be pressing it right down on the top of your soap? So it would flatten the top of your soap.... right?

I'm hoping to find a way that I can still keep the top of the soap gloppy but stop the ash.... if it's possible!

i pour my soap about 1/4" below edge of mold. this allows enough space so the plastic does not touch the soap. just make sure you use enough tape so that the plastic doesnt hang down and touch the soap.
