Hiya, Folks.
So, I'm new to this thing. I am totally okay with the judgement that I know I'm going to receive for this, but I have to ask. Is there any reason dry cake or cookie mixes, sprinkles, etc. can't be added to CP soap at trace? I get that there's FO in these scents, so one obviously wouldn't add it for the scent. What would the flour do during saponification and curing? I'm not saying I want to do this; I'm just asking because I'm curious, and also coming off pain meds from a recent surgery.

Also, what about those liquor mixers that don't have alcohol? Again, at trace.

Thanks for not judging my TOO badly, Friends. :)

I don't exactly feel qualified to answer this, but I'm going to anyway. Mostly because I don't add flour to my soaps. Honestly, IDK what would happen, but I very very strongly suspect that it would be nothing good enough to waste my oils on. You can find resources where people talk about adding different foodstuffs to soap at trace and their results. I guess you have to weigh the possible benefit with the possible outcome and decide if you want to try it or not. My personal guess is that cookie or cake mix would probably turn into a gummy mess, turn odd colors with the high pH and probably smell bad. On top of that, I cannot imagine they would provide an skin benefits, coloring effects or scent. Of course, I could be wrong. Some people do put sprinkles and candies on top of their soaps and those seem to do fine, but depending on what it is, it might be a pain for the person using the soap to have the food items come off in the shower/sink (such as maybe coffee beans).

Sorry you had surgery!

I think you might want to wait til you are not on any pain meds before making any soap....just saying.

Add to all those replies above, the products you mentioned are loaded with sugar, so overheating would be a huge issue. And then there is the whole food in the shower issue...yuck.

Actually, that is a VERY good point - flour and so on with the water during bathing...............................

If the amount was kept on the lower end of the scale and you were able to deal with the overheating, I don't think that it's impossible.

The question from me is also "why?" What is it adding to the soap? What are you looking to get from it? Of course, ideas are good, but there has to be a reason why we would want to add something, otherwise as I am sat here looking at a cardboard box I could start thinking about adding cardboard to soap - while it might be possible, there is not likely to be any point in doing so.

If you want to add foodstuffs to your soap, the better choices might be fruit purees, milks, coffee or beer. Or maybe some dried herbs or spices. And of course you can find fragrance oils that smell like all sorts of foods.

Hope you feel better! Smart to use this time for researching and thinking. :)

hello hello all hehe...

I have made many batches with flour added. Sometimes I added rice flour, sometimes tapioca. No problem, lather well, no lye heavy, hard bar, no oil pools, just great at all.

I like use rice flour because I want to take the benefits from rice, especially the Vitamin B. But, for tapioca, I added it just to add my total weight of my batch.

I found oils are too expensive for people here (especially OO), so I add tapioca and I could get a larger batch than just use the oils.

I don't see much difference in wheat flour vs oatmeal flour that many soapers use. I does seem kind weird to add cake mix but at some point, it was weird to add avocado, coffee, beer, pureed fruit, etc.. I say if you want to try it, save out enough batter to experiment with just a bar or two and see what happens.
I wouldn't use any kind of sugar based sprinkles though. I could see them soaking up water and getting gooey or possibly moldy. You can use small tapioca pearls. They can be colored with liquid colorant and added to batter or the tops. I coat mine in mica and sprinkle on the tops, looks like little glittery pearls.

Not that I've tried it (yet) but I don't see why wheat flour would behave any differently in soap than oat flour would (although it might affect the skin differently). I mean, if you think about it, bran muffins will have wheat flour, sugar, bran, soybean oil, milk ingredients, plus some other ingredients in smaller amounts. You then have to add your own egg to make your muffins. All soap already has oil, sugar is recommended for extra bubbles, milk is good for the skin, so is egg. As long as you don't try to use an entire package of bran muffin mix in a 2 lb loaf of soap, I don't see why this wouldn't work. A tablespoon is probably fine. Maybe stay away from rainbow chip cake, I think those colours would mess up your soap.

Add some bacon grease to the recipe, and you have a full breakfast in your morning shower.

As suggested, adding ground oatmeal or corn meal adds a little texture and visual interest. I don't know about what you would get with cake mix.
