Hello everyone. My husband and I want to create a soaping station in our garage. He wants to build me large slab mold and a storage rank. My question is will the changing temperature affect saponification and curing of the slabs are left in the garage. I live in Texas so the garage gets pretty warm during day

Hello everyone. My husband and I want to create a soaping station in our garage. He wants to build me large slab mold and a storage rank. My question is will the changing temperature affect saponification and curing of the slabs are left in the garage. I live in Texas so the garage gets pretty warm during day

I used to live in Phoenix Arizona and while I wasn't making soap at the time, I was building computers and worked and stored all my components in a metal cabinet in the garage. Even during the hottest months my garage never got above 80-85F because I kept the air circulating; I had a built-in vent at the top and two oscillating fans...one pointed slightly down and the other pointing slightly up on opposite sides.

I currently live in the central Willamette Valley in Oregon and our temps range from high 30sF/low 40Fs in the winter to 80F-90F in the summer, plus there is all the rain to contend with. I've been saponsifying, curing and storing my soap in my garage for over a year now and haven't had any real problems...no DOS or rancidity. Some things I do have to contend with...my soaps will not gel during the Fall/Winter unless I CPOP them first. It also takes twice as long before I can remove them or cut them and they need a longer cure time because it's so much cooler and the air is a bit damp. The positive side is that my Goat Milk soap doesn't have to be refrigerated. I do run an oscillating fan when the garage temp hits 80F.

I had someone buy a whole slab of soap from me to cut and sell herself and she ended up storing it in a shed that got hot and the soap turned awful colors and smelled hideous and then it developed DOS. So I'd say it's not a good idea.
