I made this yesterday. I used a bar this morning and got great lather and bubbles. I soaped at a 40% solution, and used, naturally my goat milk that had oats soaking in it for 24 hours. I strained out the oats. This was a new recipe I made yesterday. It is already pretty hard, almost can't leave a dent in it with my thumb.
The colour and swirls didn't come out as planned, but it sure smells great!

Your soaps are beautiful. How can you have used it this morning if you just made it yesterday? I am new to this, but I didn't even think you could take it out of the mold that quickly, never mind actually use it...

They are fantastic, they even look nice and hard
I am so inspired by your 40% theory
I think I will try it but just increase by one or two percent each batch just to get the hang of it, I am currently soaping at 35%

I unmolded this in 7 hours after pouring it. Waited another hour and cut it and beveled the bars. My soap is really mild since I use goat milk, silk, oat milk, and this has a 8% lye discount. No tongue zap the next morning, so in the shower it went. Now, not every soap is ready to be used that quickly. I would never even think about selling this one until it is at least 4 weeks old. It just takes time to develop a recipe and learn oils properties and synergy together. You can learn it. It just takes lots of practice, years worth.

Hey Paul! How are ya?! What do you mean by 40% solution?
I am curious.

Hi Erin, long time no see!

I premix a 50% solution I use from. As I decide which EO or FO I'm using, I then decide how strong I want my lye solution strength be be before trace in my batter. If I know a FO behaves well, I may go up to a 30% solution strength. On a fast moving FO, I'll soap at a modest liquids discount, like 33% lye strength. After you know how much lye is needed, you add more or less of your preferred liquid of choice to bring my 50% solution rate down to where I want it for that batch. I always add my goat milk at emulsification. I use the straight 50% for the first few minutes of the batters creation. There is a lot more to this than I covered here. I love making soap and learning from every batch!!!!!

Paul

Gorgeous soap Paul! You have inspired me and I have now achieved my first successful swirl - using the colours you have here and doing a double pour in an upright milk carton. Thanks for sharing these lovely soaps. This forum is the best place for inspiration and information!

Pretty!!

What do you do with all those shavings??

B

I keep them and do one of two things;

1. Sell them as "potpourri" soap shavings by the ounce at my craft shows and farmers markers. My wife makes a refillable soap sock/washcloth. You simply open the top up and add a big pinch to the washcloth, and let the lather and bubbles go!

2. Rebatch....which I do not like doing!

We usually have a few 5 gallon plastic buckets full in the spring after soaping all winter. It sells great by the ounce! :D

Beautiful, Paul! I'm not sure I understand the 40% solution thing still (lol) but I love the colors you acheived. Cool tip about things to do with the shavings, as well. :D
