Does anyone use tallow in soap? If so, does it have to be frigged if used from Soaper's choice? I'm looking at all options for soap making and studying the options, their viability, environmental impact, market opportunities and the impact on other people. What would the shelf life be?

I wouldn't suggest frigging tallow, since I think it would be kind of slimy.

I wouldn't worry about putting it in the refrigerator, if that's what you meant, because iirc it stays good for a year. I'll wait for someone else to weigh in, though ^^

The lard I buy i keep it in a cool place, but my tallow I render my self (because I only use kidney fat) and this I keep in the fridge or freezer. So I guess it would depend on what's been added to the tallow you buy. Ask them what they recommend.

I use shortening from the grocery store labeled as "contains meat fats". Supposedly, its 96 to 98% tallow. Makes lovely soap and cheap and easy to use.

I believe Crisco is all vegetable, isn't it? I don't like the vegetable shortening. It seems to make my skin dry.
I use any old brand, usually an off brand. Haven't really seen any name brand meat shortening. Whatever is cheapest.

Crisco does have one that contains palm oil but I'm not sure what the rest is, I need to read the label on it and the store brand. I have heard tallow makes a nice soap. Soapcalc has Crisco listed in the oils I noticed.

I haven't tried the palm oil shortening. I don't believe we have it in our stores here in Texas. I would love to try it, though, so I think I'll read some labels next time I go. Maybe I just never noticed it.
Tallow does make really nice soap, I think. It's nice and white and hard. I also use Coconut, Canola, and Soybean, and shea butter. I'm a frugal soaper. I only use 3.8% shea.

Do you use all of those together in a recipe? Do you use lard at all? I live in Texas and we have Crisco with palm oil in it here.

Yes, I use all those (meat shortening, coconut, canola, soybean & shea butter). Is the Crisco with palm the blue label?

I use tallow GV Shortening, in my soap. When I ran it, lard, and Crisco through the calculator, lard and tallow were almost equal in terms of quality. Crisco seemed to lose some conditioning and hardness.

I see a lot of people using canola. I have never played with it. I will have to check it out.

All Crisco brand now contains Palm. A lot of store brands I have seen only contain soybean and cottonseed oils. Walmart and Save A Lot are the only places I have seen that have animal fat in their shortening.

My first bar of soap was made with nothing but store brand shortening (soybean/cottonseed), and I SF at 5%. It gave me a nice hard, white bar. I have one bar of it left, that I just noticed a DOS. It's starting to smell like used frying oil, so that's telling me that it's going rancid. :shifty: It's about 7 weeks old now, but I plan on keeping it just to document changes with.

I don't know I'm going to have to look. I have not ever tried canola oil, I have heard bad things about it, like it causes DOS. What percentage would you use for a 2LB batch?

Well I can't promise what your results will be, but I have never had problems with DOS and i live in the very humid Houston area. I use 16.5% each canola and soybean. And I have 6 year old bars with no DOS

I have had DOS with soy oil, but I have a lot of it, so to use it up I put no more than 10% in my soap that has a high percent of tallow or lard.

I find tallow to be "friggin" awesome in my soaps. I eat the beef, might as well use the tallow too, dogs don't need it all. It makes a nice hard bar. I store it in the freezer until I need some, then pull one container out and store it in the fridge. I don't know if I need to, I just do. I have found Shure Fine shortening to contain tallow also. I am not fond of the soaps made with Crisco, either palm or no-palm versions. It's too soft.

I store all my oils in the fridge, I am lucky that I have a spare one I can devote to oils and wine.

I live in the Texas panhandle and it is super dry here so do you think humidity is a factor in whether DOS happens?

I've heard that DOS is related to both humidity and superfatting. I have both high humidity and superfat at 6%.
