Sunflower oil?

i'm new to soap making and I want to try saving money on my first batch, so I thought to go for sunflower oil as a 100% base oil. I learned that it takes longer to trace if sunflower oil is more than 25% base, but that it also can be sort of substitude to olive oil. Can I make a good soap with sunflower oil alone?

Quick answer.....no

It's great to add with other oils, but you're going to need some hard oils in there to make a stable nice soap.

ETA: You can make a respectable first soap with vegetable shortening....it takes less time to trace and you would have a more usable product.

Olive oil alone makes a great soap too.Although it has to cure for quite awhile . 75% OO and 25% CO makes a bastile , a very nice soap.

to me, sunflower on its own feels a lot like very fresh olive (slick and slimy) but sadly this does NOT cure out in my experience.

If you use Sunflower, keep in mind that it has a short shelf life unless you get the High Oleic kind. When I order my oils from Soaper's Choice (Columbus Foods), I get my Sunflower from him. They even have different sap values so be sure which one you're using. Same thing with Safflower. I haven't seen the high oleic versions of either of these in the stores locally so I don't buy them there.

My first soap was 90% OO and 10% sunflower, turned out fine, but it makes for a very soft bar on it's own. I rarely use it now, well maybe now and then
