Hello Everyone, I'm new to soaping and have made a batch of soap 50% olive oil, 26%coconut, 20% palm and 4% castor. It has turned out a lovely soapy bar but there is a slight sulphur smell when it is wet. It has cured for 4 weeks. Will that smell go away in time?

G'day Tara, I've had some unscented soaps smell faintly like that and it stayed in the soap to the end. How much lye discount did you use ( or superfat %)?

Hi Tara I looked up Sulfur Dioxide Gas on Wikapedia and it says it is a food preservative E220. If it were in any of your ingredients it may come out in your soap when mixed with water. This wont help this batch of soap and I am probably talking through my hat ( I am not a Chemist) but it may help future batches. Steve :D

Thanks

Thanks ewepootoo and Bubbles for your reply. I used 5% lye discount and put the recipe through MMS lye calculator. I used a fragrance but it was made for soap, but maybe it had a preservative in it.

which fo, from where? ive had a few soap smell funny also, but more like old shoes? it did go away though!

Bad smell

Thanks Honor,
yes it did smell like old shoes, you're right. I couldn't put my finger on the smell. I used Bramble Berry Blackberry and Sage fragrance, which I thought would be OK as Bramble Berry have a very good rep. But it is good to hear the smell in your soap went away, maybe I will leave it for a few more weeks and hope it goes away.
