I did have a little problem in my second batch that I wonder if anyone has words of wisdom on. I opened a new bottle of lye, and had an awful time measuring it out because of static. It literally poured sideways, and I had more of a mess than I wanted. Is there anything you can do to cut down on the static?

From the little experience I have, I don't pour the lye, I have a stainless steel spoon and I scoop it out and haven't noticed anything at all. I bought a 10pound thing so it's in a pail with plastic and not in a container like I had before.

I wish I'd ordered a container like that. I'm new to soap, so I didn't go overboard on supplies (yet  ). I bought my lye in 4 tall plastic containers that have about a 2-inch diameter opening. The first container didn't have any static. The second one was a nightmare of static, and I only needed about a half ounce out of it. Drove me crazy.

I have had this happen too.. I think it was CertifiedLye.com or something, It was very annoying, especially because when I would go to measure some would fall out of my measuring cup because of the static, or stay within it... I suppose a cure would be to ground the thing somehow... but not sure that would work...

I could see the spoon would be good , It probably would act as a conductor to let it flow through your body since you are 'grounded' since you are wearing shoes;)

Someone suggested a while back to use a dryer sheet and wipe the inside of the container you will pour the lye into. I did that and it works like a charm! I pour my lye crystals, not scoop, so I have had the displeasure of the static.

Give it a try!

that is an exceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellent idea, I never even though of that lol

You can also wipe the outside of the lye container with a dryer sheet or a cloth soaked in fabric softener. That removes the static even before you pour the lye.

That's what I do, too, and yes- it works very well (I use the dryer sheets). I also wipe down the container that I pour the lye into for good measure. No static at all.
