solids or swirls?

i am making up some gift batches and i am wondering do your customers, friends, testers or other input givers prefer solid bars, swirls, vibrant colors, sedate or pale colors, no colors? colors that "match" the fragrance like strawberry soap is "supposed" to be red. i have a few batches i want to make but i am torn mostly between solids and swirls so i need opinions. what is your "crowd pleasers" look wise...?

Well, I sell into two totally different markets. One wants the natural look...they dont want dyes, colors, or anything like that. Then, the other market wants solid colors...blue, yellow, black and red are the colors I make for that market. I don't even use the same scents for each market, they are two totally different type of people. First being, back to earth people, wanting to know everything they put into and onto their bodies. The second is fetish people....the wilder I get with those type of soaps, the more they will buy.

My family and friends (testers) have thought the swirls and layered ones are so neat. They seem to be drawn to them even though those particular batches weren't the best smelling.

Thank you Lisa! I have only been soaping since April, so I'm just not ready to sell yet. I'm still learning about how the FOs will act and I don't know what my soaps will be like down the road. Maybe one day I'll sell, but for right now, I'm having a wonderful time learning.

I can't vote because I'm like NancyRogers. I make soap mainly to please myself and I'm just learning how to use different colorants, FOs, etc. Everyone likes something different about the batchs I've given out. One sister does love the unscented and uncolored bars. She likes using them in the kitchen because she says she doesn't have to worry about food picking up a scent from her hands. Otherwise, everyone picks out the soaps by scent. Although, I do try to match the color to the scent.

My personal preference is swirls - bright, subtle, whatever. I just like the look of swirls.

Thank you Lisa! I have only been soaping since April, so I'm just not ready to sell yet. I'm still learning about how the FOs will act and I don't know what my soaps will be like down the road. Maybe one day I'll sell, but for right now, I'm having a wonderful time learning.

I bet your soaps are going to be great down the road! I'm in the very early learning stages - only a little over a month. It is fun, though!

I wonder if people view the swirled soaps as being more artistic or maybe more time consuming so they are attracted to those factors versus plainer soap.

I also think there are folks who just like free soap, whether it be colored or uncolored.

It would be interesting to see if people prefer a plain bar with a scent versus a swirled soap without a scent.

Interesting, my personal favorite, and one of my best sellers, is plain white, loads of cocoa butter and unscented.

Do I sell more because it's my favorite?

But my "people" haven't expressed a preference one way or the other. They take each as it comes - swirled, dots, solid. Whatever goes with the fragrance.
