Hello All,

My name is Michelle, I am very new to soap making so I am hoping to get some good advice on how to start the whole process. Lately I have been making foaming body wash with Castile Soap and I like the results so far, I just need help with adding color and fragrance. My goal is to make all of my products organic and as close to natural as possible.

I also make body butter and I am running into the same problem with scenting the body butter and making for creamy without adding water and chemicals.

Any advice is welcomed and appreciated!!! Thanks!

Hi Michelle,

Welcome to the forum! :D

Here's some links to sites which will help you with starting soap making.

Generally, you don't add water to body butters. Have you tried using essential oils for scent?

Hello Hazel,

Thanks for the warm welcome and also I thank you for the links. I greatly appreciate the information. :D

I have been making my body butter with butters, oils and I have tried essential oils as well as fragrance oils that are approved for cosmetic use. I am not sure if I am not using enough or if I need to buy different butters.

I try to use organic raw unrefined butters and oils (ex. Jojoba, Avocado, Coconut, etc...). I think I might have to use the refined and deodorized variety??

I don't understand the question. Are you saying you've added fragrance to your body butters but the scent disappears and you think the problem is the unrefined oils and butters?

How much EOs and FOs are you adding per pound?

The problem that I am having is the scent does not smell natural, especially when I use Shea Butter & Cocoa Butter. I think the natural scent of the butters is clashing with the EO & FO.

I generally use about 10 drops of FO/EO for approximately 8 oz. of butters & oils mixture. Currently I do very small batches for personal use.

My question is, should I use different types of butters/oils so they do not clash or do I need to use more FO/EO??

Sorry. I misunderstood. I use to add approximately 5 grams (weighed on a scale) into 10 oz. You could try adding 20-24 drops and see if that helps. If not, then you'll probably have to switch to refined butters.

I hope this helps.
