Hi All
This is my first post I've been making soap for several years and are always interested to see new recipes and ideas. I came across a guy who sells a soap with over 15 oils in the recipe. I normally us a max of about 5 so was very curious.

Extra Virgin Olive, Palm, Coconut, Macadamia Nut, Castor, Wheat Germ w/vitamin E, Apricot Kernel, Jojoba, Almond, Avocado, KuKui Nut, Organic Honey, and Organic Aloe Vera. Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter.

I'm guessing alot of these are superfatted in, but the qty's must be tiny, would this really make the ultimate soap bar or is it just bit of clever marketing ?

Steve

If you ask me, it's just clever marketing. You can make a really nice 'ultimate' bar with only just one oil.

IrishLass :)

I agree with Irish Lass. When I first started soaping, I thought I had to have every (expensive) fancy oil and butter out there. After trying them, I've discovered some of my favorite bars are the simple 3-4 oil ones.

Sounds like marketing to me ... and I'm sure reading the label is exciting for some folk, but I prefer soap that doesn't have a label like the commercial types.

Plus looking at that list ... people with allergies are going to find it a no go soap!

probably marketing - but IMO - as a soapmaker my first question would be "why?"
I mean I understand the appeal of those nice oils, - for marketing purposes - but that is a lot of oils for one soap, and as one poster said, a lot of them are probably in such small quantities, really would they add that much to the overall effect of the soap? Personally, I wouldn't think so, but that's just me. :)

Maybe the person just had a lot of little bits of oil to use up :)

It's marketing, and it may not be so clever. Most people who are looking for handmade soap are into simplicity. 15 oils is not simplicity.

This is what I was thinking... I would look at that list, decide it's too long, quit reading and put the bar back. LOL!

I made a lip balm with 11 oils, some really fancy ones, and it did make a difference in that case. Now soap, I have no idea. I really wouldn't want to make it! Measuring out all those oils would be a PIA. The properties overlap anyway, seems like a lot of fuss.

lets get down to the nitty gritty - nacho

when one can't decide the best oils to use, they use them all.

probably figured it would average out to be a nice bar..

man I'm a smart a$$!
