I wasn't sure where this post would fit, but since it is a CP class, I am sticking it here in the CP thread. There is a CP class being taught nearby next weekend and I am seriously considering taking it. It gives me a chance to learn the basics (I am below a newbie on the newbie scale) and see if it is even something I would like to pursue. Has anyone heard of this class or taken this class before? I have looked on Yelp and could not find any reviews and thought maybe someone on here possibly would have taken this class. Seems interesting...

She does classes in Annapolis, MD and Hoboken, NJ:

Wow! That's a lot of material to cover in a one day class! Haven't heard of the instructor, sorry.

It's odd. The website clearly says "one day class" but the link says "two day intensive." How will they make and then cut the soap in one day, I wonder?

It looks a little pricey... $197 for the class and $45 more for materials. You might want to try watching a few of the Soapmaking 101 videos on Youtube and reading some of the tutorials on this forum. $242 would buy a lot of supplies to help you get started.

Hi,
I recently saw this class advertised as well as I live near the Hoboken location and looked into out of curiosity since I took a class earlier this year from a different instructor just to feel more comfortable and see how someone else goes about it. That class was 2 1/2 or 3 hours and covered all of the basics and then some to get you started. She also offers separate classes including business classes, advanced techniques, lotions etc. I think that trying to cover it all in one day is excessive, especially if you have never made soap before. I think my head would be spinning by the end. It also seems to nickel and dime you. There's the class fee, the materials fee and you have to bring you own equipment. Mine was one flat fee including material and they supplied the googles, gloves, tools, etc. It could be a great class, but I don't think I would want to learn everything in one day - I would find it overwhelming. Just my opinion though.

It looks like an intense class with advanced techniques, and information for those wanting to sell their soap. I think that you would do much better to keep lurking her, ask questions, and in addition to viewing the you tube soaping videos you can pick up a couple of basic books. Soap Queen has a nice book that I keep hearing good things about. It was less than $14 on Amazon.

Yikes I left off the 101 I didn't mean all you tube soaping videos, the soaping 101 videos, there are other good ones, but also some questionable ones. Of course you can always ask here

I second Olive Oil2 - Soaping 101 and Soap Queen TV on Youtube are both great resources to get you started.

Thanks everyone! With your advice, my empty pockets, and a conflicting plan that day, I have decided against the class. Investing that much into a class of that cost that I can't find any info on is a bit wacky for me when I'm the type to drive 3 miles out of the way to save 5 cents on gas! :)

I am going to look into those online tutorials that were mentioned and keep working on my scrubs in the meantime.

I'm a little late to this party, but for whatever it's worth, my 2 cents:

(Keep in mind this is only my opinion, and other folks may interpret this differently. ;) )

This line, which is from her class description, kinda set my teeth on edge:

"Access to my exclusive resource list of preferred ingredient suppliers with website links"

Exclusive? Really? Like a good internet search won't undercover most, if not all, of what's on that exclusive list?

Just kind of rubbed me the wrong way.

I think your idea of the online tutorial videos is a good one. I'm entirely self-taught, and didn't discover soap discussion forums like this one until late in the game.

Thanks Panzerakc, that is what I was thinking too about the whole resource list thing. As a newbie (in any field) you probably don't know what exactly you are looking for and are not confident in lots of choices. The resource list doesn't give me the warm fuzzies then making me think I am screwing things up already by buying gear at the wrong places, etc...
