I have been playing around with the soap calc and have a question on: Water as % of Oils 38

I was thinking of trying (for my first batch a 75%EVOO, 20%Coconut76, 5% castor oil batch with a 5% disc.

question 1: can i use the calc with a superfat 5% and add the castor at trace or should I use 72/25 with 5% disc and then add a few tbl spoons of castor at trace?

question 2: the water as % of oils is set for 38 default on the calc. I have had some feedback to use 30% . could someone plz explain this portion to me? what is the diff btw 30 and 38? faster trace? touchy lye?

thanks!

soap

hi there!

i'm going to try to answer this but i know others can do a better job of it...

for my soap both c/p and rtcp i set my superfat level, then combine ALL my oils, and set my water at 33%.

the less water i use, the faster the trace and apparently it takes a little less time to dry. 33% is a comfortable range for me, it's all a matter of preference. it is where i do best.

The % of water is a matter of choice to the soaper, but if you're new to cp, I wouldn't take that amount too low. Heartsong's 33% is a good one for the amount of OO you're using.

Keep in mind with that much OO, it will take longer to get hard than other soap recipes will.

Yep, 33% is good. And honestly, it doesn't matter if you add the castor at the beginning or at trace.... it's going to sap out the same either way. Complete saponification takes hours, so you might as well dump all your oils in together. The only real way you can select your superfatting oil is to HP your soap and then add superfatting oil at the end of cook (which is not really necessary, but it can be done if desired).
