I made soap 5 weeks ago and added fragrance oil from naturesgardencandles.com.
The scent is nice, but the smell stays on me, mostly my hands after I'm finished washing. I washed my hands with another bar soap to try to get rid of the smell, nothing, I still smell it. I had to put lotion on my hands to cover the smell. The recommended percent stated 5% or under on their site. I used 5% in a 2 pound batch. Did I use too much? Any suggestions? What percent do you typically use?
Thanks in advance.

depends on what I'm going for in that batch of soap and also depends on the fragrance. If I'm looking for a lighter fragranced soap or if the FO/EO I'm using is pretty strong I use 1/2 oz ppo, if the fragrance is lighter or I'm looking for a moderately fragranced batch, I use 1 oz ppo. I haven't exceeded 1 oz ppo that I can remember unless it was on accident while weighing my FO/EO out and even then it was maybe .1 or .2 oz

5% is 0.8 oz ppo which isn't very much above the standard 0.7 oz ppo (which is roughly 4.5%) that is recommended. But this is why test batches are important :) This way, you find out which FOs are too strong at the starter 0.7 oz ppo amount. There are many that are perfect at 0.7 oz and others are so strong they only need 0.4 or 0.5 oz ppo. Then there are some that are weak at 0.7 and will need up to 1oz ppo (as long as that is within IFRA recommended levels) or they will just fade in CP all together.

When you say "ppo" is that referring to the amount of oil weight in the recipe or yield of soap made as the final soap? I've read to use between .7 - 1 oz., but get confused as to using the lye calculator which amount I multiply the .7 - 1 oz.

I've been doing the .7oz., but find some of the scents don't stick in the CP soap. I'm now wanting to do 1oz. and have been applying that to the finished yield of soap (5lb. batch of soap using 5oz. of fragrance oil). I made a 5lb. batch of soap last night using the Irish Spring (type) FO from Sweetcakes, but today, there is very little scent. I made a smaller batch of this a couple months ago, using around .7oz/finished yield weight and it seemed to have more scent than this batch.

ppo=per pound of oil, weight in the recipe.
