I was making a coconut soap and once I put my FO in it went to a soup like consistency and had what looked like curdled cheese throughout it. It didn't seize. Quite the opposite...just went to soupy cottage cheese. Any answers as to why? Ready to give up.

So mad at my FO's.

This exact same thing just happened to me when I added the coconut FO. Curdled salad dressing it looked like. Wire wisk or Sb brought it together for a few seconds, then, back to curdled mess. I am about to give up on coconut FOs.

I did give up...I poured the whole lot out and just said forget it...I give up. I was so mad :( I wasted heaps of oil :( Now I'm making some lotion bars. So far so good :)

Most coconut FO's tend to discolor; I can't rembember bad behaviour though; but it is well possible.

1st Where dd you get the FO:? was is meant for soapmaking, or perhaps for candles? You cannot allways use them for both.

What you described had happened to me before too. I kept SB-ing until I had a rather smooth mass.

When that fails, the other option is to make it HP. You put everything in a double boiler or crockpot. If you haven't got either, just put one pot in a bigger one, partially filled with water (au bain Marie) on the stove; keep stirring until smooth and let it rest - lid on the pot - until applesauce or mashed potatoes structure is achieved. Depending on the size of the batch it could take some time. If it seperates after a while, just SB it back into a smooth paste. Just mould it then (or scent and colour before (moulding).
This works in my experience; other people put the batch in the oven, but have never done that, because I like to see what's going on in the pot ;)

HTH

ow, and sorry that this happened to you.

I can recommend Coconut FO from Sensory Perfection. No discolouration and no issues.

It smells more like real coconut though rather than cheap suntan lotion.

I've made a salt bar twice w/creamy coconut from Nature's Garden. Although I didn't have the cottage cheese mess it did turn brown and ended up smelling quite different in the soap than straight from the bottle. Not a bad fo, tho.

I cannot tell you why, but it's called ricing, and yea - some FOs cause it. you can try soaping cooler and sometimes if you use your stickblender you can smooth it out (but sometimes it gets too thick when you try this so be prepared to throw it into a pot and HP it)

Ugh...sorry you're having trouble, but I've learned to never throw the batch out. Stick it in the mold and see what happens. Sometimes you get surprised. Then if it still sucks, at least you gave it a shot. As others have said, you can HP it too but I've never done HP. I'm beginning to also stick with a couple suppliers I know have quality oils instead of always looking for the bargain. It just doesn't seem to pay. You definitely get what you pay for with FOs. Don't get discouraged. The next one'll rock. :)

Agree 100%! Came to that conclusion myself after my dreamsicle/lard stink. Not to mention soap that doesn't smell anymore after a month.

I use Creamy Coconut from Scent Works. It is a little pricey, but it soaps beautifully - no A or D, and the true coconut scent really sticks.

I just made some coconut-lime bars using coconut FO from Wholesalesuppliesplus. They turned out beautifully and smell so delicious. Sorry you are having problems. Try a different supplier.

As I posted above, I got this curdled stuff too....it was not even as nicely arranged as ricing! The soap is out on the cure rack now. Does not smell like anything at all. Not sure if it ever saponified even. I am just letting it be for awhile. The FO I used was Coconut from the now defunct SoapSilly. I actually got this FO in my last order before SoapSilly closed up shop so I have had it for quite awhile and it has been kept cool in a dark cupboard. It was an amber colored liquid but when I went on the DayStar site to check it out, their description of it said it was a clear liquid. So, maybe mine was a different composition or maybe it had turned bad on me. I have no luck with coconut FO. I have tried quite a few of them.

I got my FO from Escentials of Australia. I've been really happy with all my products from there but this one just hasn't liked me. I still stand by Escentials of Australia though. They've always done right by me. I'll just get the Brambleberrys FO from a different supplier. I'm going to send him an email and let him know that it does this along with a couple of others because I don't even think he knows. This FO might be best in leave in products.
