Smooth surface soap

I was just looking around at pictures of soap in the gallery, and I must ask, how do they get it so smooth on the surface? When I pour my soap into the mold I just try to smooth it out with a spatula, but it's still rough looking. That leads to my other question... My husband offered to cut a piece of plexi-glass to press down on top of the soap in the mold to make it smooth. But then it won't be able to "breathe"... does soap need to be exposed to air to harden? Long question short... what do you do to make the surface smooth?

Smoothest comes from either CP soap poured at thinner trace, or from the cut side.

If you have to spread it then it won't be perfectly smooth unless you plane it.

I've never tried it, but I have read some people rinse their soap after cutting it, they say it dries really smooth.

Try pouring at a thinner trace. My soaps are all pretty much smooth, so no need for a spatula.

I've read of people using clinging film or other covers on to of their mould go get a smooth surface also on that side. I actually like the rough side of the soap, it makes it different from commercial soaps and gives it some kind of a special feature, I think.
