I ordered some shower gel base from Sweetcakes a while back plus some Polysorbate 20 in order to attempt to duplicate the Honey Lemon shower gel from L'Occitane they discontinued.

I added the yellow liquid dye that made a beautiful bright shade. Then I added the Polysorbate 20, lemon EO and honey EO mixed I thought according to directions lol.

The upshot was that even those the color was beautiful the scent was very very uneven. Sometimes you could smell it sometimes not. It wasn't for sale OR gifting thankfully and I did use it til it was gone waste not want not.

But I'd like to know what I did wrong. I think I got the proportions wrong sometimes I have trouble understanding when they say one part of EO or FO and one part Poly. I more understand tablespoons, teaspoons, ounces etc.. even a bit of metric...

The supplier should give the amounts or percentages to use for an e.o. or f.o. When a recipe states to use one part e.o. to one part polysorbate 20, that just means to use equal amounts of each. You first need to figure out the total amount of fragrance needed for your batch of shower gel. If you want to use equal amounts of lemon and honey that won't be a problem, but if you want one scent to be more pronounced, you will need to experiment by using parts. I use Q-Tips to test scent formulas.

Bramble Berry has a fragrance calculator:

I meant Honey FO there is no such thing as Honey EO far as I know. Knowing what I did wrong I might take another stab at custom scented shower gel there is plenty of base and Polysorbate left not to mention loads of scents.

Should I heat the base slightly first?
