I came across a relatively new soap company called fat& lye who use a round tube soap mold as I am planning to use. They are already launched as a company where I am still starting out. They are in Seattle and I am on Vancouver Island. What I am wondering is would it be ok to use the same shape of soap or should I look at something else such as a square mold? I just find that there are already too many rectangular shaped soaps out there already. What could I do to set myself apart?

I think the shape of the bar matters less than the uniqueness of the ingredient and scent combos. If you want to set yourself apart as far as shape goes, you'll have to get very original.

(Oops, i accidentally hit send before I was done.)

I'm just north of Seattle, so not that far from where you are. Are you doing CP or HP?

I make different shapes of soap, but my standard bars are rectangular. It may be that there are "too many" rectangular bars because that's what people prefer. Although I make round soaps, and soaps made in other shapes in individual molds, there's something about washing your hands with a rectangular bar of soap. I have been guilty of standing at the sink, warm water running, eyes closed, rolling a bar of soap over and over again in my hands, smelling the incredible fragrance, and enjoying the lather. I don't mind other shapes in the shower, because then you just kind of hold onto them, and rub the poufy thing across their surface, but when hand washing......I love to roll!

I also agree with SageontheMountain, I think to be successful, you need a great recipe. People may originally buy a soap for it's unique shape or whatever, but they will become repeat buyers if they love the soap itself. Make great soap and the shape matters less. Good luck to you!
