Are you making CP or HP?

If you are making CP, adding extra oils at trace is just going to up your SF percentage. Lye does not care what oils it reacts with, it is going to react with all of them equally when saponification takes place. Trace does not mean all oils are saponified. Most saponification takes place in the mold. So, if you are planning to add a "special" oil at trace to keep it's properties from reacting with lye, it is just not going to happen that way.

I think you can keep SF oil from reacting with lye in HP, but someone more experienced with HP needs to verify that. I only use HP for rebatch and liquid soaping.

If you want to add extra oil at trace, I do think you need to include that oil in your calculations. It's good information to have.

thanks. But many places i ve read that an extra oil is added. So i guessed it was not included while calculating lye. Hope to get few more answers to my query from experienced soapers in the forum. Thanks

If you're doing CP soap and feel you need to add a "superfat oil" at trace, add it. As Susie pointed out, it most likely doesn't make a difference, but if it makes you feel better, by all means do it. I also advise you to build that extra oil into your recipe calculations. If you don't, you're just shootin' in the dark as far as how much free oil you have in your soap. The consequences of not paying attention to this issue can be softer soap, shorter lifetime in the bath, less lather, and possible rancidity (DOS). This goes for CP and HP methods.
