Hi everyone,
I made my first batch of soap 18 days ago, using lard, NaOH and water. It's still curing, but it looks good so far (the mixture was lovely and creamy when I put it in the moulds).
The way I rendered the lard was to:
1. Chop 780g of pig fat into small pieces, put it into a wok, add 1/2 cup water, heat slowly.
2. Once about half the original fat has melted, I drained the oil off using a sieve, then returned the solids to the wok.
3. I repeated the draining and heating process a number of times until the reminder of solids was fairly dry.
4. Because I used a sieve rather than a cheesecloth, there were some small solids in the lard. So, I poured the oil into a second container, leaving the dregs with the solids in the first container.
Any comments on this? Also, if I want to use a cheesecloth, would a cotton tofu cloth also be OK? I live in Shanghai and tofu cloths are more available it seems than cheesecloths!
