I'm looking at getting a planer/beveler and am wondering what those of you that have one would recommend!

I have found them online from several companies but am having a hard time deciding which one to order. If anyone has any recommendations I'd appreciate them! Thanks!

I just recently bought this beveler that LotionCrafters sells:

http://www.lotioncrafter.com/store/Best ... 16162.html

I really love the bevels it makes. The curved metal shaver part gives my soap these really classy looking, rounded 3-d (as opposed to flat) edges. They look so cool and Grecian-like.

The only drawback is that is that it is a bit slower going when I bevel now. I used to use a potato peeler, which would take me all of 5 or 10 minutes at the very most to bevel a 2.5 batch of soap, but it takes me about 30 minutes to bevel the same size batch with this beveler because almost every other pass you make with your soap tends to gum up the blade with soap, and it needs to be cleaned off in order to make sure that the next swipe is a clean swipe.

I must admit that that's probably my own fault, though, because I'm one of those impatient soapers who like to unmold, cut and bevel all in one fell swoop to get it out of the way. I'm sure that if I waited a few more hours or even a day after cutting to bevel (when my bars are harder) that the blade wouldn't gum up so much. I know, I know...my bad. In any case, I love the way my soaps look when all is said and done. Very, very classy looking.

I own the same beveler as Irishlass. It was recommended by several other soapers on the forum. Customer service was great, shipping timely, and I even received a "goodie bag" with my order.

I don't have anything else to compare it to and am useless with a potato peeler (I blame it on being a leftie in a rightie world!), but it seems to do a nice job.

Good luck making your decision!

I've never used any other ones, so I won't be able to give a comparison, but my planer/beveler from Kangaroo Blue is due to arrive tomorrow. I picked that one after reading a ton of reviews and feedback on different bevelers, so hopefully I picked the right one. :)

HeyJude and IrishLass - I just ordered one just like yours from a company in Canada. Sounds like it's a good little tool! I can't wait to get it.

Thank you for the recommendations!

Can you post pics of the type of bevel you get??

Are bevelers easier to use than a potato peeler .Me and a peeler = a very little wonky bar of soap.

I have been using a potato peeler but I think an actual beveler would make the lines more even and the bar more professional looking. I like the look of a wider/bigger bevel than I can do with my potato peeler (and have it still look good). I'm not sure if it is easier to use a beveler (I've heard it can take a little longer than using a potato peeler) but the results are worth it I think!

That is good to know.Do you mind me asking where you got yours in Canada? I don't think I have seen any on the sites I was looking at.

Thanks

A beveler just cleans up the edges of your soap so that the edges are not so sharp. Typically a beveler will have a couple of choices for the depth of bevel you would like. Sometimes they come as a planer / beveler. A planer makes the face of your soap more smooth and even.

Kangaroo Blue has a nice planer / beveler. Go to Kangaroo Blue and look under tools.

I have been trying a very old Dial-O-Matic food slicer , it seems to work pretty good , it has a crinkle cut blade too.But the Lee Valley beveler looks like a very good tool. I think I need to add this tool to my wish list.
