Hi there - I only know about CP, what I can tell you though is that I understand that you use food colouring to make crayon soaps. I'm sure that the MP experts will be able to tell you how to harden your soaps.

Cheers

So food coloring as opposed to soap colors? I have some of those, can certainly try it :)

Alright well I'm taking a guess :D I'm sure the ones by Crayola have tons of crap in them.. but I think (hope I'm right) that I read you guys saying that coconut oil makes your CP bars harder? So I added a little to my MP base, along with FO and food coloring (as opposed to soap coloring, which feels strange to do lol) - it's curing up now so as soon as it's done I'll bathe kids (or myself! heehee) and give it a try!

Cross your fingers for me!

Round 1 - slightly successful. Could stand to be a bit harder, as well as a bit darker - however it DOES write on the tub :D

Cut up and remelted the bar and added a touch more CO and a little more coloring. Curing now.

I wish I had some beeswax.. :(

Round 2 - works GREAT, doesn't stain the tub even after letting a red one sit on the edge (wet) overnight.. Only issue I'm having is that after sitting overnight, the "crayons" have white spotches on top, apparently coconut oil that seeped out.
I need either a new method to get it better incorporated, or I need to make it work with less CO.

Pics coming later!

What about just adding extra food colouring in a little bit of water of a lighter oil light Sweet Almond?

I so can't wait for pictures......

I'm not sure that just adding CO to MP will make it any harder. CO in a CP or HP recipe will harden those but it is saponified in the end result.

Your post intrigued and inspired me to try making Bath Crayons.

I think I've come up with a good formula:

.5 oz of Stearic acid melted into 16 oz. of MP, I've found that mostly clear with a touch of white gives the best results. Stir in .25 oz of white kaolin clay and color using FD&C or D&C colors. Pour into molds. Ikea makes a long thin ice cube mold that's perfect for Crayons.

HTH, Deb

Thanks for the inspiration!

I just grated up and melted down a basic white (non-scented) batch of soap I made a few weeks ago, and added some Wilton colour gel. Turned out great and the colour is nice and dark. I'll give them a try tomorrow and report back!

Don't mean to hijack, but does anyone know how to get rebatched soap to NOT look so messy/gloppy in the mold? If this works I may invest in some crayon molds but they still look really sloppy from spooning the rebatched soap in. :\

Just updating.... they already set (I had grated a basic recipe that had lard in it, so it hardened fast!!) and they turned out perfect!

I just tested them on my tub and they worked well and washed away easy with no staining.

Been one of those weeks!

Okay I've tweaked a lot, ended up not using the CO (it was seeping out and leaving white blotches after it cured - guess the whole saponification thing was right) but I did re-melt and cure it again which seems to have made it harder.

I've done about 8 colors, and I started doing them in ice cube trays because it makes the perfect size for little hands and they're not flimsy like in other molds. Just a good ol' chunk o' soap crayon :)

I thought about trying Wilton colors but those stain SO bad on everything else, I'm afraid to use them. I used plain ol' food coloring and here's what I got..

Nope, no staining on anything. I took a RED one and drew all over the tub, edges, grout, shower wall.. and I left it for over 24hrs.. no staining whatsoever, I'm thrilled!

I already have orders for more than 6 dozen, too!
w00t!

So far I've sold out of all that I had made (about 8 dozen for now) and have more orders already! I didn't realize how quickly these would go over!
