I just made a bath soak with salts, sodium bicarbonate, and colloidal oatmeal...I used an energizing EO blend and colored it with a little purple ultramarine. I used it in my bath today and loved it except that the ultramine colorant kind of floated at the top and left a slight film in the tub.

Does anyone know of another type of colorant that works well in bath soaks/salts....preferably natural?

Also, after I added my EO's the mixture obviously became moist. If I make a larger batch and want to store it in a jar or container will it get all yucky inside the container?

I would appreciate any guidance!

Hah, I'd love to know about the colorants too, I made the same mistake the first time I made bath bombs with mica. It was so nasty. After the first one, they all went into the toilet (which was kinda pretty).

You could use clay or herbal powders to color your salts and soaks. However, they will float on top of the water. Clay can also be slightly drying to the skin.

You can use the water soluble FD&C or D&C dyes for coloring salts. Because they're water soluble, I've heard they will tint the water but there's less chance of them leaving a ring of color in the tub. I made bath fizzies and salts as gifts and no one mentioned the water becoming tinted or a ring in the tub. I bought the dyes from http://www.tkbtrading.com/category.php?category_id=40

Thanks for taking the time to answer....I think I'll play around with some other colorants...It seems like the choices are either use something that will tint the water or use something that will float on top of the water...I'll post if I find anything that I really like :)

You're welcome. I was glad to help out and good luck with it. I wish I had more experience with colorants in salts and could give more suggestions. I'd like to hear how it turns out for you.

The only other thing I can say is that no one called me up screaming that their skin had turned purple. So I consider using the liquid dyes a success. Also, I don't think tinted water is necessarily a bad thing. It might be kind of neat.

I'll look in my notes because I know I had info about changing colors in salts. The salts look one color in the container but after dissolving in water, they turn a different color. You might find this an interesting effect. Just give me a couple of days to hunt them up.

I'm sorry it took me so long. I couldn't find the original info (I'm so disorganized  ) so I googled different search terms. It's also been a long week.

soapbuddy's correct. You need water soluble FD&C or D&C powders. I made bath salts as Christmas presents a couple of years ago and I had intended on on trying this color changing salts. I ended up just coloring the salts and not using any powder.

Meanwhile back in the laboratory...

First color and fragrance your salts. Make sure the salts are totally dry before mixing in a minimal amount of the water dispersible FD&C or D&C powder. Then make sure the powder is completely mixed among salts. Supposedly the powder isn’t noticeable but when the salts are added to the bath, the complementary color tints the water.

Say you wanted to make Christmas bath salts. You could color the salts with a green liquid colorant. Then if you mix in a red powder, the powder will disperse and tint the water red. Hmm…not a very attractive image.

I’m sorry I don’t remember the amount for the powder. I do remember you don’t need much because these powders are very concentrated. I’m afraid you’re going to have to experiment with trying to establish the correct amount.

I saw these recipe scoops on tkbtrading which can give you an idea of the small amount you need to use. As a suggestion, you could try one cup of salts and then use an amount equal to the small scoop.

I hope my explanation isn't too confusing.
