The first soap I made was a peppermint soap made from lard, OO, and CO. I love that soap. I still have 7 bars left and I was noticing last night that some of them have faint light brown spots, I wouldn't call them orange. Is this the famed DOS and does this mean the soap is no good? They still smell yummy, not bad at all...

That doesn't sound like DOS from what I've seen.....do you have a pic you can post?

yep that's DOS

They will start to smell soon, so if you want to keep the soap for personal use you will want to dig out the orange (or whatever) dots. They are simply rancid spots - not poisonous or anything.

eeeewwwww I had some of that nasty on a couple of my soaps. Since it was only a couple bars (the rest were used by yours truly  ) I chunked em.

Bummer....

The spots have actually been there since right after I sliced the soap, 2+ months ago...still doesn't smell. I will make sure they are the next soaps I use. This is the only batch that I have made with this recipe that has gone DOS...the only difference is that I soaped this pretty hot (120 deg) and the other I have soaped at 100 or lower....

whoa there nellie - since you CUT your fresh soap? well it looks EXACTLY like DOS, but that should take a month or two minimum to form so perhaps it isn't.

I have some DOS on soaps that I made but they were there when I cut the soap too so I figure its from the colorings not being mixed in enough. They still smell ok and its been a month now.

Yes since I cut it. I first noticed it on the curing racks the day I cut it, back in November. And like I said, they smell YUMMY and they don't seem to effect the soap.... Maybe it is the coloring??

if they were there from the start I'd say that something didn't get mixed in well - either a touch of the colorant or the FO.

but holy cow - it looks just like DOS: it's a like a poster child for DOS!!! So anyone who wants to know what DOS looks like can still use it as an example! it's textbook.

except for the fact that it's not. LOL.

Dead ringer  I would have swore it was DOS.

I feel so much better now! This was my first batch...so the powder color that I used was from AC Moore...does that matter? I am sure it isn't the best stuff...

I love this soap...I know I sound daft, but I really love this soap... :D

Everyone's right....it looks EXACTLY like DOS....but it isn't.

I'm glad for you that it's probably something not mixed real well....your soap should last a long time. :)

I am glad to know what they look like - I have been lucky so far and no DOS for me. =D
