I'm not sure if this has been approached somewhere before but here it goes. I'm new to soap making and I have bought clear glycerin based soap base and white glycerin based soap base. Both stink when I'm melting it with no added scents or essential oils. Now I AM pregnant and I'm not sure if all bases regardless of goat, shea, white, olive oil stink when melting or if it's just the glycerin based soaps.

Is there another soap base that is not glycerin? Or do they all stink when melting? (Or could it be a pregnant thing?)

Thanks in advance for any info, tips, ect.

First: goat, shea, white and olive M&P bases are all 'glycerin' soap base, they just happen to have a bit of goats milk, shea butter, white coloring or olive oil added in to the standard base.

Some craft store bases smell bad. Life of the party and others that are available in a non-professional setting tend to have an unpleasant odor. If you burn your base (over-heat) you can cause it to smell bad.

To answer your question we will need to know where you are buying your base, the brand, how long you are heating it per quantity and by what method is your melt?

PLEASE check with your midwife or OB before using ANY essential oils. Some can induce early labor and/or have other effects you may not want/need.

Hi,

I've never found that my bases stink when I'm melting them, there is a slight odour which isn't exactly pleasant but that isn't usually something which bothers me.

As you've said it could be that its one of those things because you are pregnant or it could be that you have it on too high a heat - that can really stink :D

My base doesn't stink either. I have tried many bases and never smelled any bad ones. Your pregnancy may just have your sense of smell acting wonky. I remember this well!
