A recipe that I am about to start soon calls for coconut oil. Is organic extra virgin coconut oil a good choice? If not, what is the best one? Thanking you in advance.

How much does that cost? I think most of us use coconut oil that is intended for soaping, which I think is refined. It's anywhere from $1 to $4 a pound. The common types are Coconut oil 76, Coconut oil 92, and fractionated Coconut oil. The first two are typically solid until their respective melting points (76F or 92F) and the latter is liquid. I buy my coconut oil from online sources.

I dont use the spendy organic one, try superwalmart, they have one for 5$, that is called "luana", its much cheaper, or order online, at soaperschoice or wsp or oilsby nature.

You can certainly use extra virgin coconut oil (it'll work just fine), but as the others have said, it's a spendy choice to soap with. If you make lotions or balms, I would save the virgin CO for those instead and use the refined coconut 76 or 92 for soap. Your wallet will be much happier.

I purchase 76 degree coconut oil from wsp- love it, love the price! I think the price even includes the shipping...

Virgin Coconut costs quite a bit more, and I had a hard time finding the amount I needed for making soap at a reasonable price. It's different from regular coconut oil in one significant way- It SMELLS LIKE COCONUT- just like a bottle of Hawaiian Tropic! So, unless that is something you want, save your money, and buy the regular coconut.

If you really want to use organic you can purchase certified organic expeller pressed coconut oil for $38 per gallon or $135 for 5 gallons from wildernessfamilynaturals.com.

But if cheap is the goal soapers choice is the cheapest I have found at a dollar a gallon.
