Can you do this? I have some organic pumpkin from my garden that I'd like to puree and put into some M&P soap. If I cook it thoroughly, can I add it to the soap? In what proportions? Or is this a no-no? I'd appreciate any advice please. Thanks.

There are afew other thread about food in M&P here at the SMF. In short, it will rot. It can be added to CP but then it interacts w/ the lye & what not. In M&P it's just not a good idea. It would be like getting pumpkin soggy & leaving it in your sink for a few days :? .

Hi peaches,

I have been making MP soap for around 10 months now and can tell you what I have found :)

I made a goatsmilk base MP and added 1 tablespoon pureed fresh banana and 1 tablespoon pureed fresh avocado to 1 pound soap base plus the contents of 2 vitamin e gel caps. I also added 1 tablespoon ground almond meal and poured into molds when beginning to thicken up, to suspend the meal through the soap. I used fragrance oil, not eo's. The soaps were medium - not hard yet not too soft and not crumbly at all.

After around 3 months the fo's had faded about half way and the soap worked just fine - soft creamy lather and gorgeous on my skin. I still have a bar of each fragrance at 6 months down the track and they both still smell nice and feel great - nothing has rotted as yet.

To sum up, perhaps it depends how much food you put in and whether it is pureed or not. Chunks of food may easily rot. HTH!

These are dry bars though, right, or are they wet & sitting in a soap dish. It is when you add water that you hydrate the food & it spoils.
Also, just because you do not see/smell the rot/bacteria, does not mean it is no there. If you had it lab tested you would probably be shocked at what was in your soap.

Yes Tabitha, they are dry and wrapped in the cupboard. Thanks for that info.....I will see about where around here I can have them tested :)
