Hi everyone hope you are well. I have bought some purple colour for my soap and as soon as I mix it with the soap it turns black :( looks beautiful in the pot then when it goes into the soap batter it all goes wrong! Any ideas why?

Thanks for reading me thread

What color did you purchase? Does it say it's for use in CP soap, or is stable at a high pH? There's a lot of colorants designed for use in MP soaps and non-soap cosmetics that will change in the high pH environment that is CP soap.

It also might continue to change as the soap cures. Maybe it'll turn back to purple, maybe it'll change into something completely different. I made a loaf using colors that I knew weren't stable (though they didn't change the way the seller's site said). Started of a nice blue and green, went light as they were mixed in (expected), then to greyed out versions (like what's used for military colors), then turned pink and orange! And the final soap is a mix of blue, green, and some purplish-pink around the edges.

Hi yeah said it was fine for cp soap its an oxide I have the same in blue, pink, green, black, yellow and red they all work fine its just the purple :(

How much did you use? Maybe it was too much. Or it could be one of those that takes a long time to settle down. Don't give up yet! Sometimes things need some tweaking to work. :)

I added a little at a time but as soon as it touched the soap batter it turned black :(. I made another soap about 4 weeks ago and it is still grey! Good job I don't sell my soap its just a hobby for me at the moment :)

Maybe it's the color of your soap base? If you're using a recipe that has a greenish or yellowish tint to it, that could definitely interfere with your colorant.

I had the same problem a couple of days ago. My lavender oxide just turned gray with a slight lav tint. Seems like the best route to go is with micas. ImageUploadedBySoap Making1395966421.176766.jpg

I've used some liquid colorant that went black at first but after stirring went back to purple. I'm not sure what could make it stay black.

thanks for the replies guys. I am trying to find different colours but at the moment this is all I can find (I live in the French Alps and it's hard to find anything here) I'm looking at ordering colours from the UK but shipping is proving costly. I will have to keep looking

Happy soaping everyone :)

I've used the ultramarine from WSP, and did get a lavender, it was strange took two or three days for the grey to turn lavender. I really like these two micas: Violet (just plain violet the other will morph) and cosmo from
http://theconservatorie.com/
They recently took off their information off their site on which micas don't morph, I love both of these. They do have that $50 minimum. There was a co-op purchase on this forum, not too long ago.

AS your supplier if this colorant the purple is stable in cp soap. Many are not.

I second mixing either your blue and pink or your blue and red together. You should be able to get a nice purple. My favorite purple is from Nurture Soap Supplies / Vibrance Purple

I have used TKB's Magic Violet Ultramarine and gotten a very nice purple

I don't have to use much, maybe 1/2 teaspoon for 2 lbs of soap, if that much. I mix it with a little bit of the water and add it in at very light trace. When I use oxides I mix them with a bit of my oils and then into the batch at light trace. I haven't had trouble with any of them giving me odd colors.

I mix lavender ultramarine with blue food coloring (blue fc morphs to purple) for my purples. I mix them because the food coloring is supposed to fade easier from sunlight. Blue food coloring will stay pink for a day or even two before turning purple though. I add the ultramarine in first until I'm satisfied, then I add in the blue food coloring and the batter goes pink.

This is just food coloring

Hi guys this is the finished result! Unfortunately I wanted a lot of purple and as you can see it went a blackish grey colour. There is some blue in there as well which stayed blue and you can see the red and pink embeds stayed red n pink also, they are all the same make and all oxides. Its a shame because purple is my favourite colour :(
