I found a pre made body lotion base sold by one of our Australian suppliers however I didn't see any preservative added. Could this be added after purchase?, if so which preservative and how much?

I've not really spent much time making anything outside of soap but neither did I want to rush into the body product making side of things too quickly either so thought the pre made bases would be a good starting point for now. I had a look at another suppliers ingredients and they have a preservative in their lotion bases so i'm not sure if i'm missing something here or not.

This is the ingredients list from the first supplier:

All Over Body Lotion

Ingredients. Distilled Water, Emulsifying Wax derived from Vegetable Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Coconut Triglycerides, Apricot Kernel Oil, Wheatgerm Oil, Sorbitan Stearate from Palm Oil, Cetyl Stearyl Alcohol derived from Vegetable Oil, Cocoa Butter, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Natural Vitamin E, Shea Butter and Rosemary Extract. Add up to 3% as a mix of essential oils.

Wowser, that's scary reading  Just after I posted the thought had crossed my mind about it being contaminated before reaching the purchaser, I think i'll give this a miss. Thanks for posting that info dagmar :D

I'd ask Irena (soapbuddy). She's good at lotions and such. Me - not so much.

This said, I don't think so.

some suppliers insist that GSE is a preservative, but it's efficacy is limited to that of the contaminants in the material, which happens to be (ding ding ding) a preservative. so their item may, in fact, be adequately preserved - but not properly labeled. and I don't personally play that game.

ask them for the data from their preservative challenge testing...

Yup, that's where my aversion comes from- not knowing what exactly is in there...

Thankyou so much ladies, i'm glad you could steer me in the right direction. I think i'll give this one the flick and look at something more reliable. :D thankyou again.

I would pass. Grapefruit seed extract or rosemary oleoresin extract are anti-oxidants and do nothing as preservatives. That's a lawsuit just waiting to happen.
