Howdy folks,

I said I'd get off my duff during yesterday's football game and finally make some real-deal lotion. I ended up with a migraine so now need to get off my duff. Would someone mind critiquing this recipe? I've been putting it together off and on for a bit...

I need to find something to do with the hemp before it turns so I figured i'd try it out... Also have sunflower, jojoba, OO, pumpkin, grapeseed, CO, castor, lard, sweet almond, meadowfoam, fractionated CO, avocado, mango butter and cocoa butter.

I thought I'd save the jojoba & meadowfoam for another day when I know what the heck I'm doing. I want to stick with a single oil/single butter unless y'all think I'm missing out.

I'm after a thickish winter lotion (almost a cream) that feels silky and sinks in.

HEATED WATER PHASE
11.5% Aloe Vera water
50.0% water
2.0% sodium lactate

HEATED OIL PHASE
10.0% Shea
12.5% Hemp

5.6% Soft & Silky Wax (25% of oils)
3.0% cetyl alcohol
2.0% IPM

COOL DOWN PHASE
2.0% cyclomethicone
2.0% dimethicone
0.5% preservative
1.0% fragrance
1.0% Vitamin E

Just made this. I Made LOTION! Woot!

Now I'm not sure why I felt so intimidated by lotions. It was just as easy as a whipped butter. I did the heat and hold in the oven once I got the water and oil phases up to temperature on the double boiler.

The silkiness is there for sure and this formulation stays on the skin... Even after washing my hands, I can feel it. I'm definitely going to make more with other oils and probably a higher water percentage to see about making one with a lighter feel. I think Mango butter and Sunflower will be my next one.

I have been experimenting with lard as part of the fat in lotions and scrubs. There's a saying that goes "an expert is someone who is 40 miles away from home and carries a briefcase." I think I've tended to ignore lard (or tallow) because it's so readily available and so, well, homely. It's well worth trying if you don't have an objection to animal fats.

Yay! I love mango butter in lotions... And the 2% ipm + silicones are def a good choice...
