Having a disaster with the last batch of pine tar looking like lumpy mash potato in the mould, I Decided to get it in the mould this time when it was still liquid. However after 24 hours it is firm (I use the term loosely)' with a lake of black oil floating in the middle. I've tipped the oil off and cut it into chunks in the hope it will cure. The PH level is fine with no zap, but what I do wrong? Not enough lye or did I not wait for proper trace?

I made my first pine tar soap very recently, so I cannot really answer your question, so someone with more experience feel free to jump in. Mine didn't reach trace nearly as fast as the videos I watched did. Did you add your pine tar with your oils then mix? You mentioned that your poured it when it was still liquid, so it probably did not get incorporated well enough. If you didn't get zapped, I think your soap should be alright (again-more experienced folk please step up!) after a full cure.

I put the pine tar into the oil before adding lye as I saw a tutorial where this was done which she said would stop the fast trace issue. My soap didn't trace as quick as I've seen others Perhaps I didn't mix enough.

Pine tar soap

I have the same thing here. I used Soaping101 recipe. I'm confused because it was so thick I had to scoop into the mold. After I scooped, a thin layer of black oil cover the soap. 24 hours after, i's still to soft to unmold.
welsh black... what happened to your soap?
Do I have to rebatch or let it cure? Thank you.

I didn't like the aesthetics of my first attempt at pine tar so I tried a second time with hot process. The HP was a lot easier, it didn't seize and the resulting bars look rustic but in a good way. I mixed the PT in with my oils and melted it all together in my crockpot before adding the lye. I found it is much easier to work with this way.

Hmmm. No zap, lots of oil, too soft to unmold ... I suspect not enough lye for the oils in this batch. Measuring error, perhaps? Is your pine tar a 100% product and not a P.T. hoof dressing with added oils/fats?

If the batter separated due to not being fully emulsified, I would expect the soap to be relatively firm and zappy with oil on top.
