Pig farmer making soap

Hello there

I farm pigs, very fatty pigs. So fatty that I began to accumulate so much that I searched for alternatives to culinary uses, which naturally brought me to making soap.

Relatively new, did a few test runs last summer (2024) and then started doing batches about 5-10kg at a time. I’ve tried a few recipes but I just stick with 100% lard - I’m not looking to be a soap maker as much as I am to make use of the entire animal. Since I already have a sunk cost into the most expensive ingredient I’m not keen on buying additional ingredients.

Turns out there is a decent demand for plain old lard soap, no scents or other additives. Also turns out I enjoy making the stuff!

Anyhow, I’ve come on here to do research a bit so I thought I would make an account in case I need to ask any questions.

Welcome to the forum. Lard makes wonderful soap. I like to use some coconut oil and Castor oil to give the soap bigger bubbles.

Welcome to SMF! I recently developed a “heritage soap” made with 60% lard, a tribute to the former pork producers in our town. Sadly, the farms are now covered in houses. We also had apple orchards, so I scented the soap with Nurture Handmade’s Apple fragrance. Be careful you don’t trip down a rabbit hole, or you’ll be branching into other soap fun.

Welcome. Lard soap is some of my favorite! I wish I lived closer to a butcher to get it straight from the source rather than getting it from the store.
