Do you have a preference? I know they have different qualities/acids/sap values, but I can build a good soap on either. There is a cost difference and I'm trying to save money. Aren't we all?

Which do you use?

I use both, PO is different than PKO. PKO is a good replacement for CO, not for PO. I usually use a blend of PKO and CO to make the percentage I used to use for CO. What other oils do you have? I like OO, PO and CO. I would use those three if you are limiting what you use!

So... you're saying just 100% palm oil or 100% pko?
I'd go for the pko and superfat at up to 20%

That said, I like my recipe's well balanced, and use both of them.

Sorry, everyone, I didn't get to check back because I can't access the forum from work.

I just learned something, so PKO is a good sub for coconut oil? Right now, I'm out of palm and I'm trying to decide whether to buy PO or PKO.

I have coconut, castor, apricot and castor oils on hand.

Have considered doing a lard soap and was playing around with soapcalc for a trial recipe. Would PKO work with lard and olive oil?

Thanks everyone.

Yes- PKO can be subbed for coconut oil, but not for palm oil.

A good sub for palm oil is either tallow or lard.

It can sound somewhat confusing because their names- PO and PKO- are so similar and they both come from the same palm fruit, but they couldn't be more different from each other. Palm Oil (PO) is derived from the flesh of the palm fruit, and Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) comes from the seed or kernel of the palm fruit. Two totally different animals.

If you are out of palm oil (PO) and need something to replace it, I would not replace it with PKO. I would replace it with tallow or lard instead.

Yes- PKO works very nice with lard and olive oil. You can use it in place of coconut oil for the bubbly/cleansing oil in your formula. Just make sure to run everything through a lye calculator, because even though they can be subbed for each other, their SAP numbers are different.
