I was trying to get palm oil or palm kernel oil. I hardly got something, but I dont know, if it is palm oil or palm kernel oil. This oil is solid, white, no scent, looks like margarine. It was bought in a health food store for frying. The declaration on the package is: 100 % Palmfett (producer Rapunzel, Germany).

I think, but Im not sure, that this is palm kernel oil. I want to be sure, so can anybody help me?

And the second question: Is crisco the same as margarine?

I feel so stupid...

Just going on that description I'd say it's Palm oil. :) My palm oil looks exactly like that: solid white in a tub. Harder than margarine though. I use the organic shortening.

My palm oil looks like that also. Palm Kernal looks like big flakes of coconut.

Crisco is nothing but vegetable oil that has been shot through with extra hydrogen atoms to make it solid.

Margarine may have some hydrogenated oil, but it also has added water, salt, dye and flavors.

Just to be contary :) My PKO is very white,& solid.(Not all pko is in flakes) The palm oil I have is creamy coloured & at room temp is a butterlike consistency.Hydrogenated palm is more solid.
If used for frying it's most likely palm oil. Palmfett would translate as palm oil yeah? Perhaps try to phone the manufacturer. Or hopefully one of the european soapers on the forum will know more
Gee I was a big help huh?

If it was found in a health food store for use in frying, I would bet my bottom dollar that it was palm oil (not PKO). My local health food store, as well as the regular grocery stores around here sell palm oil for frying, too. It comes in a 32 oz. tub and is solid white.

Having said that, my PKO is also solid white. PKO is sold in 2 forms- flaked or solid. I have the solid kind. I have never seen PKO in grocery or healthfood stores, though. It would be nice, but no such luck.

IrishLass :)

Edited to add that Crisco and margarine are similar in a way, but have different uses. Margarine is mainly used as a spread to "butter" ones bread or to drizzle on food in place of butter, while Crisco is used mainly for making baked goods in place of lard.

I have no doubts about my palm oil any more.

And I have obviously crisco too - hura! The stuff is solid, not named "crisco" like in soapcalc, but it is "100 % pflanzenfett", which (I believe) means 100 % vegetable oil.

Thank you all for your help!!!!!

Yay! Plantzen would mean "plant", so my best guess would be indeed "vegetable" fat, AKA vegetable shortening. Could be any combination of vegetable fats though...

I just sent an email to Rapunzel enquiring if it is palm oil or palm kernel. I'll post it if I get a reply.

Probably Palmöl though, as palm kernel here (German-speaking Europe) is normally labelled Palmkernöl, to my knowledge. At least, that's what mine is called and it is also solid in a tub, but never available except for soap/chemical supply stores.

this was the answer I received:

Hi Debra,
thank you for your compliments...
Our Palmo is 96 % Palm oil and 4 % palmkernel oil.

Kind regards to Vienna

Regarding shortening vs. margerine... shortening (and crisco) is hydrogenated vegetable oil. Margerine is made starting with shortening, and then other stuff is added.

BTW, not all shortening is the same. There is "creamy", partially hydrogenated and fully hydrogenated. At 70*F the creamy stuff may be pour-able, partially hydrogenated is mooshy (crisco) and fully hydrogenated is solid. The difference is how long it's hydrogenated for. The longer it's processed the more of the fatty acids are converted from softer acids (linolenic, olenic) to hard acid (stearic).

my pleasure!

I have been wanting to get to Slovenia for some time now--maybe sometime in the summer I'll be able to visit Ljubljana! the old centre looks gorgeous!

Debra, it seems we are neighbors. I've been in Vienna a loooong time ago - big, old, beautiful city. Ljubljana doesn't have such great history, but, in my opinion, is lovely, especially in summer. Wellcome! Can you tell me the name of the company which is selling oils for soapmaking? I would like to research a little on the internet.
