Hi... I've been roped into an ornament exchange at work. I was thinking about making some small bars of soap and painting a little doodle on them.

I have tons of clays and micas. Is it possible to make a paint w/them?

Many thanks!!

I have seen this done before, but I'm not sure I remember how it's done. I think the mica or pigment is mixed with just a tiny bit of glycerin and then used like normal paint. I would think you might also be able to do it with just the mica alone for a sheer look. Have you thought about using a stamp of an embed in the soap? This could create a nice effect as well and if you wanted to, you could brush the stamp with mica for some color. Just some thoughts :)

I think the stamp is a great idea! Do you just find something that is the shape of what you want and gently press it into the bar right after you cut it?

I haven't a clue where to find glycerin unless I purchase online and I don't want to spend a lot of money. Wonder if oil or a tiny bit of alcohol would work?

You can pick up a small bottle of glycerin at any pharmacy or Walmart; my local independently owned grocery store sells it.

I used the premade soap paints last Wednesday (4 days ago) and I'm STILL waiting for them to dry. Don't think they will. I have a fan running on them and the paint is in no way thick. :( I'm going to stick to brushing on dry mica. Anyone have better luck than I did?

I definitely remember someone posting that they mix a little glycerin with mica and their soaps looked great. I'd love to find out for sure if this will work because I'm planning to try it next weekend.

That would be me. There might also be others who do the same as well, but I definitely remember posting about it not too long ago.

I make my own soap 'paint' to accentuate the stamped impression on my soap whenever I use certain Milky Way soap stamps like the ones that are shown and demonstrated here:

http://www.aussiesoapsupplies.com.au/So ... -c-66.html

I have the Milky Way 'Bee' stamp, 'Thistle' stamp and 'Dolphin' stamp. Since the stamps are made in such a way that they are recessed (which leaves a raised design on the soap), it's impossible for me to press the stamp into dry mica to stamp my soaps with like I normally do with my plain old rubber craft stamps (which are raised, but leave a recessed design on the soap). Well....I suppose I could do so, but the results sure wouldn't be pretty. When I want to accentuate the Milky Way stamp so that the design really 'pops', I first stamp my soap, and then accentuate the design with soap 'paint'.

You can buy soap paint (Brambleberry sells it, among other vendors), or you can make your own using powdered soap colorants (the shimmery micas such as gold and bronze are what I like to use), and a little glycerin.

Now, as far as the ratio of how much colorant to use as opposed to glycerin, well... that is where you have to use your own judgement. I'm very exact and thoroughly precise when it comes to my lye/water/oils/colorants ratios, but everytime I 'paint' my soap, I just mix up a small amount on the fly to be used just for the soaps I'm doing at that particular moment- meaning I never measure it and I never make enough to store away. Making soap paint is kind of like how I cook- a little bit of this, a little bit of that, etc.... I always say to myself that for reference sake I should probably keep exact measurements of each, but for some reason or other I never do.

What I can say, though, is that it is a small amount at any given time- maybe 1/16 to 1/8 of a teaspoon worth of total 'paint' if I had to make a guess. The ratio of each escapes me, but be careful to not go too heavy on the glycerin or it will take awhile to dry. If I happen to run out of 'paint' before I'm done, I just mix up a little bit more. It's usually dried within a week, sometimes less, depending on if I was too heavy handed with the glycerin or not. In any case, it's most definitely dry by the time cure is up (which is 4 weeks for me).

HTH!
IrishLass :)

I guess you could use anything to make a stamp, though I don't know how good the side of an apple pressed into a bar would look  I know there are stamps made specifically for soap, but I would think any stamp that's not too detailed and had deep enough grooves for the imprint you want should work. I've only tried the soap stamps and they work very well. They're pretty firm, unlike a rubber stamp. You hit the bar with a mallet and at just the right time and it looks great! I find soaps with cocoa butter seem to work best since the cocoa butter makes a nice hard bar of soap and relatively quickly (I need some more patience  )

i tried making paint with powder colorants and glycerin once, it looked great at first but the colors bled and faded after it dried... i also tried piping some colored whipped soap into my stamps, again looked great at first, colors didn't bleed, but they did fade...

i haven't tried using micas yet, but it sounds as though people have more success with them.

Yes, try the micas- my soaps painted with gold, bronze, or silver mica/glycerin have never faded.

Thanks for sharing Irishlass.

You're welcome!

IrishLass,

Your soaps are gorgeous!

Thank you!

Update on the premade paints...looks like after nearly 6 days they're showing signs of drying. The paints look like micas or ultras in glycerin, so I won't be purchasing them again. I'll make them myself. Live and learn.

@IrishLass...I positively SALIVATE every time I look at your soaps!
