Oven Question

For all of you that put your cold process soap in the oven, you say this speeds up cure time. Really? By how much? I take it the hot oven evaporates out a lot of the water? I let all my soaps cure at LEAST 4 weeks, if I put it in the oven how much would this take off my cure time?

This does not necessarily speed up your cure time. It just forces gel. Most who do put it in the oven still cure it for the normal time.

I don't mean to sound retarded but this just sounds like an extra step for nothing to me. I just wrap mine in a towel and it gels right up no problem. I HAVE to be missing something!

It is just a means for people who want their soap to gel , to ensure that it does .No chance of partial gel etc . It doesn't speed cure time .

I put my soap in the oven for 2 hrs at 170 degrees and then generally let it set overnight in the warm oven. In the am the zap is gone. I generally use a small end piece at that point, because I am too impatient. It is better after 4 weeks, but I haven't had a problem using it right away. I've done probably a dozen batches that way now.

I do 2 hours at 200, then out. I think all soaps are improved with age, but next day, no zap, and after a week of drying in a well ventilated area, they are definitely usable.

As one who avoids gel completely by sticking my soap in the freezer, I do not get a zap after 24 hours.

Most soap is "usable" after only a couple of days (as long as you don't have zap), albeit harsh. To ensure that your soap is fully cured, you certainly want to go the full cure time. The OP method does not speed up the cure time. It just forces gel so you do not get a partial gel.

Interesting. I think on my next batch I'll split it and see the difference. So far I really like it and don't find my soaps harsh at all. Of course it's just little old me and hubby using them.

hestia ~ do you stir during the 2 hours? add fragrence at the end? Do you transfer to a mold then or have it in the mold in the oven?

When you're talking about "gel" do you mean when the mixure traces?
