I have about 10 pounds of rebatch soap shreds that I bought, in addition to probably another 10 or so pounds of soap that I made that I thought was ugly and won't use for anything. Due to time constraints with the kids, I am abandoning soap making for the time being. What can I do with all this extra soap? I think I read something about making laundry detergent with it soap - has anyone tried this? Or are there any other uses for it? thanks!

We just had a thread on that recently but I can't remember what the subject was. I'll see if I can find it for you!

In addition to the laundry detergent recipe.....you can also use them for soap balls.....a fun project for kids. Just add enough water to hold them together.

If you don't want to mess with the laundry detergent recipe, you can also just cover the shreds with water, and add a spoonful of lye and use about 1/4 cup in your laundry. I normally don't recommend that imprecise kind of measuring, but it's diluted in water and doesn't come in direct contact with skin. Also works well as an all purpose cleaner and for dishes (handwashing, not the dishwasher....use a vinegar rinse)

You can also powder the shreds in a food processor, and add equal parts baking soda to them, and use it as a gentle scouring cleanser. Works well and doesn't scratch.

You can also place a little handfull in a cotton drawstring bag & use it like a sponge in the bath/shower.

I'd go with the homemade laundry soap. I made some this weekend and used it today. It works great!!!

Good Luck!!

It does work just fine, and it's not expensive at all. One thing I've learned with it; your clothing stays much brighter and nicer if you add 1/4 cup borax to your whites, and add 1/4-1/2 cup white vinegar to the rinse water on each load. If you don't like the vinegar smell....you can add about a teaspoon of EO to a quart. Shake before using.
