Some of us will be diving into using Ostrich oils in CP shortly and wondered if anyone had previous experiences or recipe ideas to share. There aren't many links to recipes otter than ones that state it is very similar to Emu oil, but better.

So all ideas are welcome to this experiment.

Thanks!

I found a recipe on Crunchy Betty’s blog where she mentioned emu oil to include in an oil moisturizer and I thought people might find it interesting to read. Simple Homemade 3-Ingredient Facial Oil Moisturizer

I haven't been able to find much about ostrich oil but I did find a few articles. Basically, all the info was the same and I feel it all should be taken with a grain of salt since I don't think the writers are exactly unbiased in their opinions. People may find this interesting to read. Ostrich Oil vs Emu Oil

I also found these percentages for different products on Struis Lux's site which might be helpful as guidelines.

2% for shampoo and shower gel
5% for hair balsam
10% for body lotion
15% for day cream and hand cream
20% for night cream
25% for massage cream and bath oil
91% for skin balsam

I did see a comment about using emu oil at 5% in soap. http://www.soap-body-and-spa.com/butter_oil_ingredients.html

those of you who were in the co-op, have you used your oil? i don't know what to do with it, lol... would love to hear what you did with yours..

I would certainly save such a nice expensive oil for a leave on product. I am thinking a nice lip balm would be fantastic

was thinking the same too. to make it into soap would be a bit of a waste imo. perhaps lotion? even lotion bars. guess i gotta start digging the internet for some recipe ideas..

i also have some emu oil that i dont know what to do with it, lol

i think i'm going to make a miniscule batch of soap just for me :D

Normally, I do save expensive oils for leave on products but I wanted to try it in soap. I made HP and superfatted with ostrich and hemp. I'm really happy with it and the lather feels lovely - very silky. It leaves a good emolliency on my skin and I especially like it on my face. It did bump up the cost by about .30 per bar but I don't mind since my dry skin seems to really appreciate it. I'm a little excited about it because I thought if I like it this much at 2 weeks, what's it going to be like at 4 weeks and 6 weeks.

I posted some pics. http://www.soapmakingforum.com/showthread.php?t=42554

I have just been playing with recipes so far. Haven't been up to making anything for a couple weeks, probably the weather... but I am slowly amassing ideas, a HP facial soap I want to try, a liquid soap, and a lotion are all on my list... but i haven't narrowed things down to specific recipes yet.

Thanks for the links! Interesting reading. :)

hazel your soaps like cool! i still dont know what i want to do with mine. I might try making a lotion, but i have never made lotion, and would need to find a recipe also. but i am interested in seeing what everyone else does!

Well, I take it back. I still hadn't caught up on all the email notifications but I've made it to the Feb 11th ones. Thanks for the compliment on the soap. It wasn't how I wanted it to look so I'll try again. This time I think I'll use 10% to see if it makes a noticeable difference.

Anyhoo, lotion info at http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/

What oils do you have? I can help you come up with a lotion recipe. As cmzaha mentioned, you could do lip balm. Other ideas are cuticle oil, lotion bar, might work in a whipped butter but would definitely work in a body butter.

What oils do you have? I can help you come up with a lotion recipe.

I have grapeseed oil, rice bran, peach kernal, lanolin, sweet almond, sesame, wheat germ, hazelnut, palm, cocoa, beeswax, coconut, unrefined shae, and olive oil. Running through my inventory makes me wanna go make something now!!! but being that it is 11 pm, and my husband is sleeping, i dont think i will :)
I prefer a cream versus a lotion, and i will start with a very small sample batch first, being that i only have ten ounces of ostrich.
thank you very much hazel!

Don't thank me until I actually come up with something you'll like. You've got some really lovely oils and I'll have fun coming up with combinations. I'll play around with this tomorrow because I was just about to head for bed when the email notification popped up.

Okay, off to bed now.
