Hello! It's been so long since I made soap (about 10 years) and after doing some reading/research I learned about babassu oil. I honestly don't remember this being around back then. Anyways, I was tinkering around trying to come up with a nice and conditioning recipe. I have VERY dry skin (eczema), which is why I got into soap making in the first place.
Can you give me some opinions about this recipe? Pros/Cons...any changes you would make?

Sweet Almond - 11%
Babassu - 19%
Castor - 5%
Coconut - 8%
Lard - 27%
Olive - 15%
Rice Bran - 15%

superfat 8%

Thank everyone!!! Can't wait to get back into it!!!!

I ran your recipe through SoapCalc and all the numbers look pretty good. Using cream as a percentage of the liquid would probably add to the moisturizing value of the soap. Although soap is a wash off product, my cream and aloe soap feels great on my skin. You should have a lot of creamy lather with some big bubbles. Good luck.:D

Thank you!!! Can someone tell me a bit more about babassu oil? It sounded to me that it was a very moisturizing and emollient oil...but some other sites say it's just like coconut and drying in higher amounts.

Would I be better off taking down the babassu and bumping up the lard? Depending on the recipe I may or may not add goats milk, maybe cream, or coconut milk (which is like heaven on my skin). I just need something that doesn't dry me out.

Should I add something else?

Thanks everyone!!!

How about this instead?

Sweet Almond - 11%
Babassu - 14%
Castor - 5%
Coconut - 8%
Lard - 27%
Olive/RiceBran - 30%
Safflower - 5%

Superfat 8%

Babassu is awesome in soap, but yes it is very cleansing. It is considered a replacement for coconut oil because they behave very similarly in soap. It looks to me like you have some redundancies in there, you can use babassu as a replacement for coconut or blend them, but I would keep the total at around 20% or so. Olive and rice bran also behave very similarly, but you can blend those too (or use a blend). I would personally use either sweet almond oil or high oleic safflower, I don't think I would bother with both.

How about:

Lard 30%
OO/RB 30%
Babassu 20%
SAO 15%
Castor 5%

HTH

Babassu, IME, is not that different than CO in CP soap. However, I do notice a difference in leave on products like lotions or salves. It is useful if you need a CO substitute for somebody who is allergic. Otherwise, I'm not sure it's worth the upcharge.
