ooops! I did it again! (Lye safety)

I was wondering ... can lye fo through clothing? I was wearing long sleeves, but when I turned on my blender it splashed a little .... am I safe? My skin is not red or anything, but part of my arm itches ... and then I picked up everything, very safely, took of my gloves, and pick up my container where I mixed the soap through the handle without gloves, and it had soap on it!

I am so mad at myself .....:headbanging: I am not a newbie.....


Is my skin going to fall off? I am so scared!!!!:silent:

Did you thoroughly rinse off with lots of water? If not, I'd suggest you do so right away.

Yes, of course it can soak through fabric. That's why I cover my work table with towels, to absorb spills & they do soak through. It will also remove stains from your fabric. I had a large splatter of soap batter on a very stained white apron that I did not rinse right away, just left it to dry overnight. When it came out of the washer the stains were gone from the area where the splatter had dried.

P.S. No, your skin won't fall off.

Yes ma'am! I always shower after soaping, and I took an extra long one. I do cover with plastic bags the area where I work.

Those table cloths from Dollar Tree are rinse-able and reusable. And you only need one, as opposed to multiple trash bags. Or an old shower curtain works well, also.

It will indeed soak through and then the caustic solution is touching your skin - depending on how much splashed on and how thick the fabric is etc will dictate how much actually touches your skin

If you rinsed the affected area thoroughly with water straight away then you will be fine.

This is a good reminder to make sure the bell of your stick blender is below the surface when you turn it on, and that you turn it off before raising it out of the batter. Glad you're OK.

I have done this three times now. Once on the top of my foot and twice on my forearms (once through a shirt and once on just bare skin). I didn't even feel the drops when they hit my skin, and didn't see them either. But after a minute or two I felt itching and burning where the batter splashed on my skin. I just wiped with a wet paper towel and the itching and burning stopped and I didn't have any resulting burns. My splashes were super small but scared me enough to be way more careful stick blending! And I never take my gloves off until everything is cleaned up. My hands are old looking enough- I don't need them to look worse!
