I made an Olive Oil Soap a couple of months ago. Now it seems to be changing from all white to yellowish in spots. Any idea why?

Yep - it's called DOS (Dreaded Orange Spots). Basically residual oils in your soap have gone rancid. Castile is prone to it but other soaps develop it too.

To avoid DOS use fresh oils, store your soaps somewhere cool and dry and where they can breathe, and think happy thoughts.

I am not sure it is the DOS. (Of course, I really don't know what that looks like). But this is not a spotting, it is more of a yellowish tone.

How could any of the oils gone bad? It is mostly olive oil.

Thanks,

olive oil goes bad. pretty much any oil does, tho some are very stable. they go bad by sitting, especially in warm or damp areas. it's called oxidation or rancidity.

Oils really prone are olive, soy, and canola among others. Coconut is at the other end of the spectrum and is very stable.

dos can be orange or yellow. post a picture and we can take a look.

doesn't look like DOS to me. are you sure it was 100% olive oil? did you fragrance it with anything or use milk in it?
if you cut it is it white inside?

Let me see ...

Here is the recipe I used
Olive Oil 85%
Coconut Oil 15%

Superfat w/avocado oil at 1oz.

I really appreciate your help!

Did you add the avocado oil at trace? Maybe it didn't get mixed in well.

Yes, the avocado oil was at trace. Just curious, though, why would the soap color later change if the avocado oil wasn't mixed in well? Could it be the avocado oil? I think I read the avocado oil doesn't have a long shelf life, but does that matter once it is put in a soap?

Both my references state avocado has a 1 year shelf life. The only oils that can go rancid once they're in your soap would be the unsaponified ones left behind as a result of superfatting. The saponification process isn't picky, it'll saponify oils randomly, even those you add at trace. That said, it's hard to identify which oil has gone rancid, unless you judge by it's age.

If the yellowing is DOS, the soap should be smelling rancid. Believe me, you can even smell it over the scent you used. Blllllkkkk!

I've been using avocado oil at .6 oz per 2 lb of oils. It's not much, but I haven't had any problems with it.

One thing I've begun doing is to add Tocoperol T-50 to all my oils when I get them, & I add it to every batch of soap I make at .04%. As you can see, it doesn't take much. So far, (knock, knock), I've been using it for about 6 months, now & I haven't had any DOS or rancidiy. I learned about this from one of our group mods here on the Forum who's been doing it for a long time with great success.

soap

if i'm seeing this correctly, the changes in color are kinda round-like pooling as you poured into the mold-concentric circles. i'm thinking, how hot was your soap when you poured? was it cold that day? how thick was yor trace? could the soap have caught a "cold" in the mold? did it heat up? i'm thinking your f/o morphed or might not have blended. some soap darkens or changes color-i have a coconut f/o that starts out tan, but after a couple weeks starts turning an awful shade of pink.

soap sometimes does weird things for no particular reason!

if it doesn't smell, and passes the ZAP test-then you have soap.

remember, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, chances are it's a duck! lol!
