I purchased 5QT+9.1 FL OZ Costco Olive Oil and want to want some pure olive oil soap with it. I also purchased some 12 OZ NaOH from a company in southern California.

Using Susan Miller Cavitch "The Soapmaker's Companion" I attempted to calculate the amount of NaOH I would need for this amount of olive oil, and I generally come up with 5 1/2 lbs which seems totally too much, or is this correct? I computed with a couple of methods: once with her formula for three oils and one for a single oil; both result in about the same NaOH. For her three oils formula, I set two of the oils at zero, which should work. Anyway the bottom line is I got about 5 1/2 lbs of NaOH.

How much distilled water do I need to desolve the 5 1/2 lbs NaOH before pouring it into the olive oil. I know the temperature of both should be close to the same and that I pour NaOH into the water. You can see I have some of the basics down, but that is it.

Do you have a Olive Oil - NaOH receipt and step by step procedure so I will not screw up too badly?

Try this soap calc. http://www.thesage.com/calcs/lyecalc2.php
5 lbs. is too much to start with. Try 16 or 32 ozs. of olive oil. Make sure you have a stick blender, otherwise it will take forever to trace.

PS. Anytime you change any oils, you need to recalculate.

Dear Soapbuddy, Obviously this is my first time on the Soap Making Forum. I hope to participate much more. Thanks for the help. Ron (Novato, CA)
