When you add oatmeal to soap what kind do you use? Do you use instant, or the regular kind ? Do you put it in food processor to make it finer? I,ve never used oatmeal before and I,m anxious to try it.

I've heard that regular and instant oatmeal go mushy, but I've never tried them and have seen others use them, so maybe someone else will chime in on how it worked...

I've been using old fashioned steel cut oats. They're pretty rough, so I grind them up into a powder in my food processor. Even the powder is still a bit scrubby.

i use regular long cook oats, i didnt grind up enough last time, lets say it really scrubs the skin! I always do my aotmeal honey, hp, the fragrance is stronger and looks more "natural", just my opinion.

I use quaker old fashioned oats. The ingredients on the back just say rolled oats. I put them in the blender, then sift the resulting powder through a fine mesh strainer. Its still pretty scrubby so don't add too much!

I add mine at trace, and it leaves no discernable smell after a day.

I have used regular and ground it very fine. It still leaves a bit of a scrubby. I also use colloidal oats, which is like a powder, which is very nice and smooth. A lot of times, I will also make an oat milk as part of my liquid. Be careful, though. It can end up like wallpaper paste when you mix it with the lye :D

I use the baby oatmeal cereal .I have read about mixing your ground up oats with water (from the soap amount) so they don't go clumpy on you. Then you add them in at trace.

If you use a coffee grinder for the oats instead of a blender/food processor it'll get even more fine.

I've used regular and even ground up really fine in my food processor, it was scratchy. The next time I used baby oatmeal and it was great. Just enough texture.

I use a mixture of baby cereal and colloidal oats (like Aveeno). Then I just add a little bit of rolled oats to the top after pouring in the molds. Works perfectly.

I used old-fashioned cooking oats. This was my first time adding oatmeal, so I have no idea what to expect during use (still curing). I added some Cedarwood Oil and a bit of Nutmeg to tone down the cedar and it smells amazing, but I did notice as it is curing that some very small cracks are appearing in the bars. I can't tell how deep they go into the bar (I don't think very deep at all) but I am concerned that the bar will be crumbly when used. I guess we'll have to see. My sense is that maybe the oatmeal absorbed the moisture quickly and caused the cracks because my soap-base recipe is one that I have used several times and had no issue with at all.

This is a very old thread and Ashley has not been seen since 2011. It would be better for you to post this in a new thread. Some members will not bother with old threads.

Other than that, how much oatmeal did add to your batter. Cracks are usually caused by the batter started to overheat or actually overheating.

Hi Colleen- Unfortunately, Ashley hasn't been on the forum in a very long time (8 years now), so she won't see your post, and most of the others who posted to this particular thread are also no longer active members. If you have questions in regard to oatmeal soap and what you can expect with oatmeal as an additive, you will generate more answers by starting a brand new thread. :)

Edited to add: LOL- Carolyn beat me to it by a split second!
