Using a recipe I've made lots of times, high in olive oil and full water, I made this soap and boy did it trace quick! Looks like lumpy mash and all the oil and fragrences has leached out. Haven't used this fragrences before but I've used other from same supplier with no problems. Lye and oil at room temp, FO put in at oil stage. Only difference I can think is that I was given some dry sheep milk and I used instead of my usual goat, I think it's high in fatty acid? Do you think this is the problem? Any one else use sheep milk?

I apologize for jumping into this thread randomly, but I was curious, can you replace Goats milk with Sheeps milk in soap recipes that call for goats milk? And if you use a sheep milk powder, how do you use the powder form? do you need to mix it with a liquid first or add it directly as the powder? Sorry for asking! Just a very curious soapmaker!! :)

You say "Lye and oil at room temp" - I think that the temperature was too low. I usualy go to 45-50 celsius (113-122F) I suppose that you obtained a false trace.

You can read here about false trace:

"A false trace can happen in a couple of different ways. One way that it happens is when you soap certain fats/butters at too cool of a temperature, or too far below their melting points for them to stay in liquid suspension when you are mixing the soap batter."

I have to strongly disagree that soaping at room temp is to cool. If using an fo or ingredients that are heater uppers there is no other choice. I have actually chilled my oils and lye solution when using a severe heating fo and it will still overheat. Overheating will cause the soap to seperate leaving no choice but to hp to save the batch. The only thing I soap at a higher temp is when making shaving bars with a high stearic acid percentage. In five years of soaping I have not had a problem with a "false trace". Not sure I even believe in a false trace. Once soap is emulisified saponification will happen.

I soap at room temp (Oils/Butters/Lye)all the time as I generally masterbatch 5-10 batches at at time and rarely have a problem unless it's caused by an EO/FO. I don't think i beleve in false trace either. I use 10% Cocoa Butter/Shea Butter & 25% PO among other things and have never had what is described as false trace. Generally my problems come with the EO/FO things causing ricing, overheating etc. I also just mix to emulsion not trace.

I agree with the last couple of posts, as I also soap cool - at or around room temperature. And I've never experienced a false trace either ..... I don't use FOs, but even some EOs can cause overheating. So, like the others, I think that's more likely to be your problem.

I think I just figured out a solution without have to turn to a crock pot. Not saying this will always work. I tried a new fo last night, and dummy me decided to water discount since I have never had a problem with this Company's fo's. Anyhoo I had instant cornmeal mush. Could not stick blend stir. It was a soap on a stick with a cornmeal texture. Now it is midnight this was my last batch of soap and I wanted to go night night. I heated up more liquid dumped it in the bucket and stirred the best I could, plunked on a lid and started cleaning up for the night. It did just exactly what I thought it would do, it started gelling so now I could stir it until smooth and poured it in the mold. This morning, granted it looks like a rebatch soap, it is fine and I did not have to clean a crockpot! If I had tried to cpop it would have continued seperating since it was never mixed properly to begin with. Won't be using Dark Temptation again and I am hoping it does not become a hot seller!!

Can you mark the batch as a limited edition?
