I made some soap on May 5th and so far it doesn't have any ash! Two things were different.
First - I left my soap in the mold covered with plastic wrap for 4 days. Usually I take it out of the mold after 1-2 days. I use this mold: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004GJ5G6O/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 so I don't have to worry about the soap getting too hard to cut.
Second - it was much more humid. I could see little droplets of something on top of the soap. I resisted the urge to unwrap the soap and investigate. I just let it sit undisturbed for 4 days. The little droplets (i assume it was water because of the humidity) went away.
I am assuming that the time left covered had more to do with keeping the ash at bay than the humidity. I have seen several posts suggesting that interaction with the air causes ash.
