Hi everyone
I've just made my first ever batch of CP soap using veg.oil & lard ( I'll move on to the nicer stuff when I master the art!! lol)

32 oz vegetable oil
12 oz water
4.12 oz lye
1.6 oz lard

I ran the ingredients through a lye calculator to check everything first, but when I was washing up all the equipment, it felt really greasy, so I was just wondering if this was some indication of how my soap will be?

Have I used too much vegetable oil?

What do you think?

Thanks all!! :)

Sorry but yes, way too much soft oil.

This is a fabulous website for newbies: http://www.millersoap.com/
There are a lot of great recipes there as well.

You might consider rebatching your soap. Do a search on rebath methods here on SMF. There are some great tuts.

What kind of vegetable oil? Here, the stuff that's labeled just 'vegetable oil' in the supermarket is usually soy, or sometimes canola, or corn. Lots of times it's a blend.

But yeah, that is a lot of soft oil. The soap will likely take a lot of time to harden up, and it will likely be prone to going rancid fairly quickly (all of the oils that are usually marketed as just 'vegetable oil' share that trait, unfortunately).

I don't know much about soaping with lard, but there are plenty of great topics on it if you try doing a search. And miller soap, that Dixie linked to, is an awesome resource.

i agree, there is to much soft oils. i would up your lard and add coconut.

the reason your dishes felt oily after you made soap was because they were oily. there wasn't enough time for the residue to turn into soap before you went to wash them. wear gloves when you are handling the dishees becaus there is caustic lye in with the oils, it just hasn't saponified yet. HTH :)

Welcome, read, read, read all there is to know on this forum, lots of info, trust me I have learnt so much from this site. Enjoy your new addiction!

Thanks to everyone for answering and being so nice!!

I'll try again with coconut oil this time - I really just wanted to practice the technique without wasting money on 'the good stuff'! lol I'll rebatch the stuff I've made, but that's for another day, I think! lol

Practice makes Perfect!
Other than coconut oil, what's good to use to make a simple but nice bar of soap?

Thanks again!! :)

Palm oil would help you with a harder bar. You can buy it in the grocery store under the name Spectrum, usually in the health food section. (Of course you can get it much cheaper online in larger quantities.)
