I have only made 2 batches of soap. One with eo one with fragrance oils. The essential oil batch lost it scent so fast. The fo just keep smelling great. My question is if a recipe calls for x number of ounces of essential oils can you substitute the fragrance oil in the same amount? I am sure that is a pretty dumb question but I am not sure, thanks for your help

Unfortunately it's not that simple - but there is an easier solution. Essential oils, (EOs) and Fragrance oils, (FO's) are the stereotypical apples and oranges comparison. We use both to scent soap and some of the more expensive FO's contain a high percentage of EO's. EO's are extremely high concentrations of botanicals. To keep it simple plant material is usually distilled to capture the beneficial oils.

Though very powerful, many of the properties including scent do not survive the lye monster. You will frequently hear "The lye takes what it wants".

Easy solution - Many vendors Wholesale Supplies Plus, Brambleberry are the 2 that come immediately to mind, include to recommended % to use. IFRA is a voluntary testing organization that can also give you amounts.

Summary - no you can't use the same amount - some EO's like clove and cinnamon are such dermal irritants at the low safe %, you are wasting your money because you won't capture any scent in your soap. Welcome to the learning journey of soaping. Since you are asking questions like this, the addiction has taken hold. :D
