New here and to soap makin

Hi, I am Kad and I am from Canada.
I am new at soap making, tbh I haven't gone any further then read a lot about it. It all started when I saw a bottle of product in my bathroom that stated it was paraben free. I asked to myself, but WHAT exactly are parabens? After reading about parabens and the potential harm it can cause to the body, although it is not scientifically proven yet, I went a little loopy (I do that a lot) and threw everything that contained anything that could be harmful to me or my husband, so the poor man has no more soap.

SOOOOOO.... after being left with nothing in the department of soap, creams and the like, I thought to myself, why not actually do my own? I need a hobby anyways

I have started researching how to make soap and here I am.

Let's see where it leads me

Welcome to the forum!

Parabens aren't evil. There is a lot of misinformation on the internet mainly produced by taking information out of context from scientific studies and by people accepting the misinformation as truth rather than doing research. I admit I also believed the propaganda until I eventually did research on the topic. :wink:

You can search the site for discussions about parabens. That being said, if you want to avoid parabens through personal preference; then there are discussions about preservatives. You'll also find Susan Barclay-Nichols' site helpful.

I might have come out a little strong with my paraben craziness haha.
I did a lot of reading about it. As you said there is a lot of misinformation on internet about parabens, and I chose to try and stay away as much as possible from it.

Ditto what Hazel wrote about parabens. A lot of hyped-up misinformation out there.

In any case, though- handmade lye-based bar soap does not need preservatives anyway.

No problem. I also freaked when I read the parabens/cancer stuff. I was horrified. Hey, it's on the internet so it must be true, right?

There's so much out there it's hard to tell what's true and what isn't true. You just have to do the research.
