Potassium hydroxide is generally used for liquid soap, and Sodium hydroxide is used for bar soap. Are you trying to make a bar soap with Potassium hydroxide? Or are you trying to thicken a liquid soap?

Thank you,but there are commercial soaps that are made from Africa called black soap that are made from potassium hydroxide made from Africa raw materials which are solid like dudu Osun. Thanks

If you're making bar soap from Potassium hydroxide, then I can see why you would need to add stearic acid to make that happen. Melting stearic acid and incorporating it into soap is a fairly advanced technique. If you're worried about the lye, I'm surprised you want to attempt high-temperature soaping right off the bat.

Here are ingredients from an amazon product: Dudu Osun Black Soap Ingredients: Pure honey, Shea butter, Osun (Camwood), Palm kernel Oil, Cocoa pod ash, palm bunch ash, Aloe Vera, Lime Juice, Lemon Juice, Water and Fragrance. Using ash for the base? Know it’s done, don’t know details

There's a bit more to it than that when it comes to black soap, from last I heard. Isn't the process a traditional one where ash is used?

Thank you for your response. Is it necessary to add stearic acid to caustics soda base and with what measure? Thanks

If you're trying to turn KOH into a bar, then stearic acid would be necessary, yes. I'm not familiar with the soap you are attempting to duplicate, so I can't give you a recipe.

This is an ash-based soap, not a KOH soap. If I understand correctly, the OP is trying to make a KOH soap that is just as hard as an ash soap.

You can use the search for African black soap, the topic comes up fairly regularly. From what I remember true African black soap is made by burning plantain/palm/local specialty leaves then using that ash to make soap. It is also my understanding that villages that make African black soap are very protective of their recipes and as a result everyone has an opinion and no one is wrong (just like family recipes of a favorite dish). I don’t think anyone on the forum has ever found a recipe to replicate a true African black soap but there are some good ideas floating in the other threads to attempt a batch.
