Check out the instructional videos by Anne Marie of Brambleberry on youtube. She goes over each step, including basic safety.
Check any recipe you use with a lye calculator like www.soapcalc.net

I started by watching Anne Marie's videos at http://www.youtube.com/user/soapqueentv and then watched them again and took notes. I read forums and books and everything I could get my hands on. Ask questions!

Don't forget YouTube!! There are videos on soap-making, swirling, lotions, cosmetics, all kinds of goodies! One night I spent well over 3 hours just watching tutorials....
I read many books for over a year before I made my first batch and that was a laundry bar. 100% co 0% sf. That way if I did mess up it wouldn't hurt anyone.
I also read through soapmaking.com pretty much every thread ;-) and asked many many questions. The people are great here and very helpful!
